Cyprinus Carpio


 

Distinctive characters : Body robust anteriorly, more or less compressed. Abdomen rounded.. Head moderate. Lips fleshy. Upper jaw more or less projecting. Barbels two pairs, one pair each of rostral & maxilllary. Dorsal fin very long inserted above tip of pectoral fins; with 3 spines & 17 rays, third spine strongest serrated. anal fin short with 3 spines & 5 rays. Caudal fin deeply emarginate, lobes pointed. Scales large, pentagonal, cycloid. Lateral line straight with36 scales.

Species: Cyprinus carpio carpio Linnaeus. Introduced into India in 1939.
