Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson 

Andy (or AJ) was born on February 29, 1944, and died on May 31, 2011 due to long-term complications of Parkinson's disease. He passed away peacefully at the Levine-Dixon Hospice House in Huntersville, NC, with his wife and primary care-giver of 13 years, Randyl McDonald-Johnson by his side. During his last weeks Andy was also supported by family members from Alaska, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Andy was born in Reading, PA, and attended Muhlenberg Township schools. He left school early to work in private industry. In 1961 he married Patricia O'Flaherty and they became the proud parents of three children. In 1963 he completed high school through Reading High continuing education classes.

After several years in private industry Andy ventured into the world of small business and became a successful owner/operator of two service stations and later a family-run convenience store in Myerstown, PA. In the early 80's he enrolled at Penn State, Berks Campus completing his B.S.E.E. degree while working for AT&T/Lucent Technologies of Laureldale where he was a communications engineer. After the onset of his disease he retired from Lucent and later, along with his son Kevin, started Bluetruck.net, a small internet service provider in Laureldale.

Andy loved to travel and had obtained a flight instructor's license. He was an excellent cook, enjoyed horseback riding, skiing, gardening, square dancing, bicycling, and had a strong affinity for woodworking, construction and home repairs.

In 1998 Andy met Randyl Susan MacDonald-Fry of Grand Junction, CO. They began a new life together and were married on New Years Day 2006. Since then they were full time RV'ers. They traveled until April 2011, settling in Harrisburg, NC, when Andy's health complications made travel no longer possible.

Andy is survived by his wife, his mother Marion S. Johnson of Laureldale, PA, his father W. Barton Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO, a brother William B. Johnson of Kent, WA, his sons Patrick M. Johnson of Fleetwood, Kevin A. Johnson of Wyomissing, daughter Melissa S. Shippey of Fairbanks, AK and four grandchildren.

Daniel Lee Keppley, 66, Spring Township, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at The Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading. He was the husband of Sandra (Machemer) Keppley, whom he married June 6, 1964.

Born May 20, 1944, in Reading, he was a son of the late June M. (Rowe) Keppley and Clarence Keppley of Muhlenberg Township.

Daniel was a 1962 graduate of Muhlenberg High School. He was a lifetime member of Skyline Drive Corvettes Inc.

He was employed in management with Acme Markets for 30 years. He most recently was employed with R.M. Palmer Company, West Reading, as warehouse manager, last working Aug. 27, 2010.

In addition to his wife and father, Daniel is survived by his grandson, Zachary D. Metz; two sisters-in-law, Linda K., wife of Michael C. Davis, Spring Township; and Mary Lou, wife of Gary Schultz, Sinking Spring; niece, Amanda E., wife of Steven Machonis, Sinking Spring; and nephew, David G., husband of Rachel Schultz; and son-in-law, John Wisniewski, Sinking Spring.

Daniel was predeceased by his daughter, Stacey L. Wisniewski in 2001.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. A viewing will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private in Sinking Spring Cemetery.

Sandra Stull Hamaker 

Sandra Eileen Hamaker, 65, Alsace Township, died Feb. 1, 2010, in the St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township.

Born March 30, 1944, in West Reading, she was a daughter of the late Herbert E. and Pearl E. (Bowers) Stull. She was a stepdaughter of the late Elodia Stull.

She was a 1962 graduate of Muhlenberg High School.

Sandra worked for over 20 years with Elite Sportswear, Muhlenberg Township, last working Jan. 18.

She is survived by her companion, Henry P. Baeighkley of Muhlenberg Township.

Other survivors include three children: Joseph H., husband of Meshell R. (Sayer) Hamaker, of Richmond Township; Duane P., husband of Tara L. (Kleckner) Hamaker, of Muhlenberg Township, and Stephanie J. (Hamaker), wife of Kent D. Schlieve, of Muhlenberg Township.

Sandra is also survived by three siblings: Janice E. (Stull), wife of Joseph Zebertavage, of Bern Township; David C. Stull of Ruscombmanor Township; and Dolores Stull of Muhlenberg Township.

There are also six grandchildren: Rashell L. Hamaker, Jacob P. Hamaker, Ryan D. Schlieve, Hailey E. Schlieve, Robert A. Hamaker and Cole J. Hamaker.

A visitation will be held Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Graveside services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading.

Harold Rice

Harold Rice

Harold A. Rice Jr., 64, Reading, passed away unexpectedly May 21, 2009, while in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, Canada.

He was the husband of Lee (Smith) Rice.

Born in Reading, he was a son of Harold A. Rice Sr., Wernersville, and the late Florence (Merkel) Rice.

Harold served his country during the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot with the Army. He was also self-employed for many years as a house painter and wallpaper hanger.

Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, four-wheeling and spending time at his hunting camp in New Brunswick, Canada.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa Rice, Wyomissing; and a sister, Linda Walters, West Reading.

A private viewing was held in Plaster Rock on May 28, 2009, and cremation followed. All arrangements were provided by Brunswick Funeral Home, Perth-Andover, New Brunswick.

Robert M. Clouser, 64, Reading, passed away March 18, 2009, in St. Joseph Medical Center, Bern Township.

Mr. Clouser was born in Reading on July 21, 1944, a son of the late George W. and Arlene W. (Kalbach) Clouser.

He was employed as a material cutter by the Valley Forge Flag Co., Spring City, for 15 years.

He was a former member of the American Kennel Club.

He is survived by his sister, Suzanne Clouser, Phoenix; and his brother, Richard Clouser, Kutztown.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

ONALASKA – Vincent “Chick” Carpenter, 64, of Onalaska died on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, in Livingston. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Onalaska, with the Rev. Don Kidd officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Cochran Funeral Home, Onalaska.

He was born Jan. 7, 1944 in Baltimore, Md., the son of Vincent and Helen Eskey Carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Kay Eddy of Onalaska; daughter, Christine Bronsueld and husband David of San Diego, Calif.; son, Scott Focht and wife Kim of East Earl, Pa.; sister, Susan Connell of Naperville, Ill.; grandchildren, Erica Bronsueld and Emily Bronsueld, both of San Diego, Calif. and McKenzie Focht and Cameron Focht, both of East Earl, Pa.; daughter, Anita Garner of Onalaska; grandchildren, Kendra Garner and Kevin Garner, both of Onalaska, and Karly Garner of Tucson, Ariz. and niece, Alison Connell and nephew, David Connell, both of Naperville, Ill.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association.

John H. Wiand, 64, Mohnton, died September 8, 2008, in Reading Hospital.

Born in Reading, he was a son of A. Myrle (Shirey) Wiand, Wyomissing; and the late Harold E. Wiand.

John was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School and attended Albright College.

He is survived by two sons, Mark J. Wiand, and wife, Gina M., Reading; and Scott S. Wiand, and wife, Anja T., Reading.

There are also two grandchildren.

Brooks D. Mitchell, a retired school teacher, died Jan. 22, 2007, at 10:20 a.m. in Reading Hospital, where she was admitted earlier that day.

Mitchell, 62, Laureldale, was the wife of Theodore A. Rapp Jr., who died June 6, 2001.

Brooks was employed as a teacher with Lancaster Public Schools for five years and Warwick School District for another five years. She was later employed as a substitute teacher for 14 years with various Berks County schools.

Brooks was last employed nine years as a teacher with the Oley Valley School District, retiring in September 2006.

Born in West Reading, she was a daughter of the late Brooke H. and Ethel B. (Boyer) Mitchell.

She was a 1962 graduate of Muhlenberg High School and a 1966 graduate of Albright College.

Brooks was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Hyde Park.

She was a gold medal proficiency roller dance skater.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Welsh Road and Fourth Street, Cumru Township, with the Rev. Charles E. Fair officiating.

Carol Ann Blandford, 60, died of natural causes Dec. 4 at 4:43 p.m. in her Spring Township residence.

She was the wife of Henry J. Blandford III.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of Susanna C. (Krezdorn) Rossi Aulenbach, Reading, and the late Louis F. Rossi.

Blandford had been employed for 18 years as a nursing supervisor by Berks Heim, last working in June.

She was a member of Wyomissing United Church of Christ, Gouglersville.

Blandford was a 1962 graduate of Muhlenberg High School and received her nursing degree from Reading Area Community College in 1975.

She is also survived by two sons, Robert J., Cumru Township, and Michael H., Sinking Spring.

Other survivors include a sister, Mary L. Rossi, Fleetwood; and three brothers: Alvin A. Fritz, Phoenix; Louis F. Rossi, Bethlehem; and Jack A. Rossi, Muhlenberg Township.

There are also five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Wyomissing UCC. Bean Funeral Homes Inc., Sinking Spring, is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy A. Collins, 58, of El Hatco Drive, Cherokee Ranch, Temple, was dead on arrival of natural causes Dec. 23 in Reading Hospital.

She was the wife of Charles A. Collins.

Born in West Reading, she a daughter of the late Harry W. and Elizabeth S. (Fasig) Hassman.

She was employed as a sales clerk for Balthaser Meats at the Shillington Farmers Market, last working the day she died.

A member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Reading, she was vice president of the church's women's group. She was a former Sunday school teacher at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Tuckerton.

She was a former treasurer of the Rain and Shine Travelers Camping Club.

Collins is also survived by two sons, Terry L., Seaside Heights, N.J., and Randy S., Pittsburgh; and a daughter, Kelly L. Collins, Laureldale.

There are also two brothers, Gary M. Hassman, Wyomissing, and Todd A. Hassman, Lenhartsville; and three sisters: Karen J. (Hassman) Fetterolf, Schuylkill Haven; Kathy J. (Hassman) Delmonico, Temple; and Cindy L. (Hassman) Fria, Jackson, N. J.

There are four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Burial will be private. Milkins Funeral Home, Inc., Temple, is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

         
James T. Hullinger

James Hullinger, retired policeman, ex-Temple official


 

James T. Hullinger, a retired Reading policeman and a past president of Temple Borough Council, was dead on arrival of natural causes Oct. 1 in Reading Hospital.

 

  Hullinger, 57, of Craftsbury Court, Riverview Park, was the husband of Joan E. (Schwab) Hullinger. He served in the Reading Police Department for more than 20 years, retiring in 1990 as an inspector. He was an assistant chief of the Temple Fire Company for five years and was a former trustee and treasurer of the fire company, and also a life member.

 

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Francis and Ellen A. (Anderson) Hullinger.

 

Hullinger was employed as a security guard by Reading Hospital and Kutztown University and in the dispatch office of Wells Fargo, Reading. He was also employed as a real estate agent by Coldwell Banker, Reading, and as a school bus driver in the Fleetwood School District.


Hullinger was a former custodian in the Muhlenberg School District and was a former Temple police officer. He was a former treasurer of the Temple Democratic Club Beneficial Association. Since 1992, Hullinger had been secretary-treasurer of the Muhlenberg Township Water Authority.


He was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School and was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.


He is also survived by a brother, Norman F., Crestview, Fla., and a sister, Arlene R. (Hullinger) Kahler, Clearwater, Fla.
