Principles of problem analysis and decisions related to the design of a research study introduced. Research methods appropriate to descriptive and theory-building designs critically examined and applied. Selected designs may include descriptive, survey, case study, ethnography, historical, phenomenology, and grounded theory.
DIDACTIC OBJECTIVES
The student will: 1. Compare and contrast research paradigms from a variety of traditions. 2. Analyze selected descriptive and theory-building designs related to specific research questions(s). 3. Evaluate design decisions related to purpose of study, existing knowledge, participants, data collection methods, reliability and validity issues, data management, data analysis, and ethical implications. 4. Apply course concepts to a problem of interest requiring a descriptive or theory building research design. 5. Describe the role of descriptive designs in the generation of knowledge for practice.
