The East Branch of the Au Gres River in northern Arenac and southern Iosco counties is an excellent example. The last 8.5 miles or so have been channelized, effectively eliminating most fish habitat.

Cedar Creek in Isabella County.  Brook trout continue to exist in this creek mainly because it hasn't been "improved" by the Drain Commissioner in recent years and the stream bank vegetation has grown back to shade the stream on the lower reaches.. Nevertheless, the upper reaches run through pasture lands and are nothing but a straightened ditch with grass banks. The  natural meanders and most of the instream cover are gone until the stream crosses Wing Rd.
