Captain America
To sum it up: Cap is to be played like a game of chess; anticipate your opponent's moves and plan well in advance for them.
Background:
Captain America was given a super soldier serum that changed his life. This serum put him at the pinnacle of human ability. He has tremendous agility, strength and speed. Captain America lost his original Vibranium shield in a attempt to rescue a Navy sub from Hydra (later on he found out they were shapeshifting Skrulls). He has since received an energy shield which is incredibly powerful. He is the leader of the Avengers, which currently includes Thor, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Justice, Firestar, and Wonder Man. He is considered to have founder status in the Avengers, which he was granted when he replaced the Hulk shortly after the team was formed (other founders are Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, and Ant Man). For someone born on July 4th of 1917, he doesn't look very old; this is because he was frozen in an iceberg for many years until the original Avengers found him. Strategy/Comments
- One of the things that makes Captain America the best in the game is his ability to take hits. Along with Hulk, Zangief, Ryu and Venom, Captain America is able to withstand a combo or two without coming anywhere close to death.
- Although he doesn't do the most damage of all the characters, his attacks rank among the top in damage potential. In fact, his Shield swipe is one of the hardest hitting projectiles in the game.
- Captain America can dominate the air when he pleases. There are three things that allow him to do so. One of them is the range of his shield swipe. Captain America can not only throw his shield on the ground, but also in the air. To top that off, Cap has the option of choosing which direction his shield flies in. Each of the three punch buttons allows him to throw the shield in a different direction. The second reason is the range of his fierce punch in the air. This move has amazingly high priority and can beat out almost anything your opponent can send out against you. The final reason is the fact that Captain America has a double jump. This move can allow you to get the extra height you need to win just about any air battle.
- Captain America is a lethal force on the ground. His Fierce punch reaches about 1/3 of the way across the screen. With proper timing, you can easily deter characters from dashing in by simply smacking them with your shield. If your opponent is not coming to you, you can resort to using your shield swipe at them. If this move hits, they will take some serious damage. If your opponent is standing on the other side and tryind to fireball you, it may be advisable to jump a little off the ground and then throw your shield. Captain America also can do a Charging Stars to go through fireballs and hit his opponent. Be careful though, it has lag time and will leave you vulnerable if it is blocked. This move is best used to finish off knockdowns. Stars and Stripes is a good air defender; use it to impede the progress of those attemting to jump in. However, it is important to make sure that this move connects, as it can leave you vulnerable if blocked. Yet another reason why Captain America can take care of business on the ground is his cartwheel. When used properly, it can allow him to cross up his opponent and go into some nasty air combos. It also helps him to get close enough to his opponent to get ready to combo. This move is also useful in getting his shield back, as Captain America can not be hit with fireball or attacks while in the middle of it. Keep in mind that you can be thrown in the midst of it. Also, watch yourself as it finishes; if your opponent anticipates the move, you may finish up into a beam super, or they may start up at your feet and work you up into an air combo. Thus, as it ends, make sure to watch your feet.
- While all the tools are in place for him to dominate the game, the brain of the Captain America player must also be prepared. You must have a game plan. Never, ever throw out a random move. Captain America can make himself vulnerable if you do so. You will pay dearly at the hands of a smart opponent.
- Keep in mind that Captain America has comboable Supers. Know how to set them up and you will be able to be a potent force. It is important to know that Final Justice goes through fireballs, does no chipping damage, and will leave him with minimal vulnerability if blocked. Hyper Stars and Stripes has the least start up time, does chipping damage and a considerable amount of damage if it connects. However, if it is blocked you will be in a precarious position. Chances are, you will eat a super or take a painful air combo once it has ended. Hyper Charging Stars will leave you relatively safe if your opponent begins a super or throws a fireball at you. Your motion will stop but you will not take damage. Be aware that it has huge startup time, does good chipping damage and does not leave you as vulnerable as Hyper Stars and Stripes if blocked. Use Final Justice to punish mistakes, Hyper Stars and Stripes if you opponent is caught off guard, and Hyper Charging Stars to chip your opponent to death at the end of a game.
- Captain America is not a beginner's character. He is not a button masher's character, either. Captain America requires advanced strategy to win with on a consistant basis. While he fails to excel in a specific category, he is not weak in any category, either. Even though he isn't very fast, he possesses tremendous agility to compensate for this minor flaw. In the hands of a master, he is unbeatable. Case closed.
