The series that would bring on the best anime duo of all time, was Sailormoon S. What did it bring exactly? Only the ever-famous Sailoruranus and of course, Sailorneptune. In the very first episode of that series, episode 90, to be exact, Sailoruranus and Neptune appeared for the first time. Of course their first appearance was very brief, appearing as mysterious senshi, shadowed in the trees. Rei’s heart crystal had been stolen from her and the two Senshi picked it up to examine it. After noticing that it was not a talisman, they threw it on to the ground where it had mysteriously re-appeared in Rei’s body. Viewers of the BSSM series knew that these two intriguing Senshi were a force to be reckoned with, and would play important roles in events to come. Even Usagi admitted that it was a new kind of war.

Sailorneptune aka Michiru Kaioh, and Sailoruranus, aka Haruka Tenoh belong to a group collectively known as the Outer Senshi, which also include Sailorpluto aka Setsuna Meioh, and Sailorsaturn aka Hotaru Tomoe. Their mission is to retrieve the heart crystals that reveal the talismans, so the messiah would appear to save the world from complete destruction. "The end of this world is coming. The only way to save us is the messiah, who can use the talisman," -Michiru. By doing this, they vowed to fulfill the mission by any means necessary, even if it meant taking innocent lives. Throughout the series, Michiru is perceived as a heartless person because of her so called ruthlessness, which is the same for Haruka. They were very devoted to the mission, and it showed, even if it had tested friendship and love.

Sailorneptune and Sailoruranus are lovers, which some people misconceive. They are very devoted to each other, but their mission comes first, even if it meant sacrificing one without the other in order to complete the mission. In their first full-length appearance, Michiru and Haruka were thought to be a boyfriend/girlfriend couple by Minako and Usagi. Of course Michiru being the girl and Haruka being the "boy". Immediately, Minako and Usagi had crushes on Haruka, and thought that Michiru was just a friend. They followed Haruka everywhere that day they met at the game center, and it was quite hilarious to see the story develop. Later, they were on their mission, and Sailoruranus and Neptune were on the scene. Their famous opening lines were: "Invited by a new age, I am the magnificent Sailoruranus." "Also invited by a new age, I am the elegant Sailorneptune." From that moment, audiences of BSSM fell in love with these two new characters. Of course, the Sailor Senshi were not on their side, because they did not know if they were fighting for a good cause. So for most of the series, Sailorneptune and Sailoruranus are on the opposite side of Sailormoon and the Inner Senshi.

Sailorneptune and Sailoruranus finally reveal their identities in an episode where Minako gets her heart crystal stolen by Eudial. The Senshi also reveal to them their identities in which there was no options. It was clear that the Inner Senshi and Sailorneptune and Uranus were not on the same side that day, because Neptune and Uranus stated that they would kill even the Inner Senshi, if they interfered with the mission.

The mission finally progressed in episodes 110 and 111 which Sailorneptune and Uranus went to the Marine Cathedral to find out who had the pure hearts that summoned the long-awaited talismans. Eudial told them that they were the keeper of the talismans, and she caught Sailorneptune and held her captive, ready to remove the heart crystal from her body. It was a sad episode, because it really showed the true devotion of Michiru and Haruka to each other. Eudial had shot Sailorneptune almost to the point of death, where she had taken her pure heart, which turned into the Deep Aqua Mirror. Sailoruranus was horrified, and was feeling as if life was not worth living without Michiru. Usagi was there too, and she tried to stop Uranus from shooting herself, but she couldn’t get through. So Sailoruranus laid unconscious, maybe dead, next to her loved one. Of course, later they were revived by Sailorpluto, and the Garnet Orb.

Michiru has once said that a world without Haruka in it is a world not worth saving. Many times have Haruka and Michiru been tested in their relationship. The most memorable scene which Sailorneptune had proven herself was in the first Sailorstars episode, where a henchwoman of Neherenia and Sailoruranus where fighting, and then Uranus was about to fall, and Sailorneptune saved her from death, even if she wasn’t physically a strong character. Rarely is Michiru or Haruka seen in the series without each other. They are a couple truly in love, and you can see their relationship, especially in the S series, blossom into a wonderful romance. Hotaru also refers to Haruka and Michiru as papa and mama, which is very amusing. Whenever there is a dispute, it seems as if Haruka and Michiru are on one side alone against the others. No matter what, they stick together, even if it means betrayal. An example of this can be shown in where they first have a dispute about Hotaru, deciding whether or not she is evil, and destroy the world, or if she is a good person. Chibiusa, as Hotaru’s friend, was on her side, and Haruka and Michiru were not so optimistic.

In is evident throughout the whole anime, that Sailoruranus and Sailorneptune are dedicated to the mission. In the final episodes of the Sailorstars series, Galaxia had "taken" control of Sailoruranus and Neptune. But it was actually offered to both of them, instead of forced. So, Sailorneptune and Uranus had to kill Sailorpluto and Saturn, themselves, theoretically under Galaxia’s control. The reason for that is that they knew they could break Galaxia’s control over them, and somehow defeat her with their powers. They were correct about breaking free from her control, but they could not defeat her, so they ended up dying. The point is that they were still dedicated to their mission, even if it meant killing Sailorpluto and Saturn, their friends in order to get the mission accomplished. Sadly, it did not help them, and their death was very sad. They turned transparent before they died struggling to hold each other one last time before they died. Of course they were brought back to life when Usagi defeated Chaos.

Many, including critics of the series, insist that both Haruka and Michiru are cold and harsh people who do ruthless acts. In some cases, it may appear that way, because of the lack of air time they get in the series, and their devotion to their mission. But many have seen and analyzed the series, including Haruka and Michiru. They both have their moments and which it shows that there is more to them than their so-called "brash" attitude etc. Michiru is a very reserved person, silent, and kind-natured. She is actually a more proper person than you might think, but it is only because she is an intelligent and mature person. Unfortunately for Ami, she did not get the good side of Michiru at first, when they had their swim races together. Since they both love the water, their paths crossed at a pool, where they challenged each other to a duel. Michiru had asked, "Were you something from the ocean in your previous life too?" I must admit, her actions were very unfriendly to Ami, when the tied in their race, when she assumed that Ami slowed down so that she would not win, she was disappointed. Even Haruka pointed that out to Michiru. But Michiru is only human.

Michiru is also a very talented person. She is very much into art, and has a lot of paintings. At episode 106, where there is a flashback on how Haruka and Michiru first met, Michiru asked Haruka if she could model for her, which was very interesting. She has done pieces such as ‘the End of the World’ and many others. Music is also a big part of Michiru’s life and many times in the series, she is caught playing her violin. She also performed in the Three Lights concert with none other than the Sailorstars. Her violin seems to be a big part of her life, and represents her personality. There was a scene in an S episode where Michiru was playing her violin in the moonlight, and Haruka was there to hear and comfort her. It was a very dramatic, and very beautiful scene.

In a lot of ways, Michiru can be in relation to all of you, and you may find similar characteristics within yourself that you share with the anime character. But it is undeniable that Michiru is a beautiful character, with an empowering personality. To prove that she is a beautiful character, the Sailorstars even thought that Michiru had been their long lost princess. ^_^
