That wasn't the only gift Sherry had in school. She loved reading. She excelled in the reading/language class so much that she was a grade ahead of her class in reading. For reading, her and two other gifted students(they were the only ones in the whole school)would go to the higher grade class and do their classwork. When she was in sixth grade, the school was unable to teach the seventh grade reading/language class, so Sherry and the two other gifted students would volunteer their time to the younger grades and tutor them in reading. Sherry's love for reading did not stop when she left elementary school. She continued to get good grades in reading/language class. Sherry used to write short stories about adventures with her friends and attempted to write song lyrics. She felt that she was not too good at writing lyrics, so she stuck with writing short stories. That eventually turned into keeping a journal. Sherry kept a journal religiously for many years. Even after being married, she kept a journal. It was almost like having a therapist.
Sherry wanted to join the band class in seventh grade, but had no idea what instrument she wanted to play. Her father was an accomplished trumpet player whose potential was never realised. He had been approached while in high school by a couple of members of the band-The Moody Blues and asked to join, but he turned them down. Poor chap.
There was a trumpet available for Sherry to use. So, she played the trumpet all through the rest of her school days. She had auditioned for the Drum Major position for the school marching band and passed with flying colors! Everyone was so impressed at how well she did.
But, a little while before that happened, Sherry's parents split up. It was hard on her, but she tried to cope with it as best as she could. Sherry did not spend as much time at home as she used to. She did not like being at home with her father.
In the summer of 1984, Sherry's brother came from California to visit. Sherry was so happy. At the end of the summer, their father decided to go after his second wife who had left him and left Sherry alone in Amarillo for a few weeks. Sherry's brother went with their dad. Sherry got a bus ticket and went to California to live with her mother. Things did not go so smoothly once there.
Sherry started tenth grade at Victor Valley High School in Victorville,California. It so happened that same year, the teachers decided to go on strike. That devastated Sherry. She was so used to the great school system in Amarillo that this was a real shock to her. Sherry's grades went down and she stopped going to a few classes while the teachers were on strike. It was awful! The marching band at Victor Valley High was terrible. The students in that class were more interested in socialising and causing trouble than actually playing an instrument. And, to make things even worse for Sherry, there was no drama/speech classes as there had been in Texas. Not during school hours. The drama classes were held after school, and Sherry could not attend as she was in band practice after school everyday. Eventually, Sherry dropped out of band class, and tried out running on the track team. And, let a couple of her friends talk her into joining the the distance running team, instead of what she was good at....sprinting.
From there, she met her future husband who threw shotput/discus for the track team and was very good at that. He had a job working in the restaurant at Holiday Inn. Sherry was working odd jobs, Taco Bell, Burger King, a chicken place(whose name cannot be remembered), as a telemarketer,etc...
Sherry gave birth to her first son. She was unfortunately unable to keep him and gave him up for adoption.
April 1987
- After Sherry and her future husband were both 18, they married in 1987. It was a small wedding. They felt pressured to get married, because a couple offered a room for rent in their apartment, but they had to be married first. Sherry and her future husband had been looking for a place to live together, with no luck. They all told them that they did not rent out to unwed couples. It had been frustrating.
In 1991,Gary was called to go to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He was there for only four months, but it was the longest and most stressful four months of their lives. In Nov. 1991, Gary was assigned to the USS Saratoga. It was an aircraft carrier based at Mayport Naval Station at Atlantic Beach,Florida. Just north of Jacksonville. Gary went on two six-month deployments. Sherry kept busy by being a member of the wives' club. After the first deployment, Sherry then became pregnant again. She gave birth while Gary was away on deployment to yet another boy in 1994.
The Saratoga was decommisioned that same year and Sherry and Gary moved to Portsmouth,Virginia so that Gary could attend x-ray school for a year in 1995.
