Ruth Avis Northup was born September 30, 1882; Seattle, Washington; the 5th of 9 chidren to Benson Leonidas Northup, Sr. and Florell Eleanor CURTIS. (Note: A 10th child was adopted: Rena Day Northup at eleven years of age.) She married William Frederick Carl Buhtz; Clearwater, Washington on July 5, 1902. She died in Hoquiam, Washington, April 3, 1949.
In 1887, Ruth moved with her parents and brothers and sisters to the Clearwater area when the area was almost completely virgin wilderness, going by boat from Seattle to Clallum Bay, then overland through the forest via a tortuous wagon trail. For a time, she taught school in the Queets-Clearwater area. Later, she lived in Seattle, Aberdeen and Oregon. Her husband was president of Western Cooperage Company, which at one time operated factories in Seattle and Aberdeen. They were members of the Baptist Church.
