GEORGE HARVEY NORTHUP, was born December 20, 1888, Houghton, Washington; the 7th of 9 chidren to Benson Leonidas Northup, Sr. and Florell Eleanor CURTIS. (Note: A 10th child was adopted: Rena Day Northup at eleven years of age.) He married Hazel I. Reed Ozouf (adopted) who died February 24, 1968. He died January 15, 1952; George moved to the Clearwater district of Jefferson County with his parents when a young boy. They went by boat to Clallam Bay and from there to the Clearwater River by horse and wagon to be among the first settlers there. As a young boy he farmed in the Clearwater valley and owned a boat with which he transported freight on the Queets and Clearwater Rivers. He was a famous river boatman, and ran many peninsula streams in Indian canoes. He also was a logger at various times and a hunter and trapper. On July 5, 1909, George married Hazel Isabel Reed Ozouf at Victoria, B.C., and they started housekeeping on the Clearwater farm. (Note: Hazel was born March 21, 1893, to Mr. & Mrs. John C. Reed, however, was adopted by the Ozouf family--Hazel was a sister to Ray Northup's wife Annie Reed). George served as a state representative from the 24th district for eight years. He became prominent in State affairs and was particularly interested in roads and bridges. He promoted the Olympic highway loop, the gueets bridge and many other road improvements in Jefferson and Clallam counties. He was also much interested in schools and fostered and supported legislation for building better schools in rural areas. After moving to Port Angeles in 1937 he was district manager for the Coyne Construction Company. During World War II he was employed by the State as an administrator for Olympic Peninsula army lookout stations, and in 1949 he opened his own real estate office in Port Angeles. George was a member of the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce, was active in Republican Party affairs, was a member of the Olympic Peninsula Development League, and a member of the First Baptist Church.
