Genealogy Research in Ontario- Ontario is Canada's most populated province and was an early destination for many immigrants from Europe and other areas. Prior to establishment of Canada in 1867, the area was called Canada West and Upper Canada and was part of British North America. Many settlers in the late 18th century and early 19th century were loyalists who had left the Thirteen Colonies at the time of the American Rebellion and migrated either directly to the area or who had migrated to the maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and then on to Ontario (Upper Canada). Others were soldiers from the British forces that were granted land for their services in the rebellion or the War of 1812 that followed. Later many English, Scots and Irish settlers migrated directly to Upper Canada. Many of these settlers helped establish the province and later many migrated further west or into the United States. A number of resources are available to help the genealogist who is searching for ancestors in the province of Ontario. The major sources are outlined below:
