GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION AS TAUGHT

IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Can we approach the Bible "cafeteria style" to pick and choose what we

will and will not do to inherit eternal life, or must we take it all?

These are all the passages (New King James Version) in the New

Testament (that I know of) that pertain to our salvation, redemption,

remission of sins, eternal life, being made righteous, justification.

obtaining mercy, washing away sins, etc. The passages are quoted; the

organization, sequence and some identified editorial comments are mine.

DOES YOUR SITUATION AND UNDERSTANDING MATCH GOD'S?

(See: Galatians 1:6-8; John 12:48-50; Ephesians 4:14-15; Colossians

2:6-8)

GOD'S PART

GRACE, A GIFT OF GOD:

Ephesians 2:5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive

together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that

not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is

eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign

through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal

life, and this life is in His Son.

Romans 5:18-19 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to

all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous

act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by

one Man's obedience many will be made righteous.

Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared

to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,

we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to

obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that

whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

2 Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with Him also plead

with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.

Titus 3:7 that having been justified by His grace we should become

heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Acts 15:11 "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus

Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they."

PREDESTINED, FOREORDAINED, CALLED:

Romans 8:28-30 And we know that all things work together for good to

those who love God, to those who are the called according to His

purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to

the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many

brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He

called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also

glorified.

Ephesians 1:5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus

Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

BY JESUS, HIS NAME, DEATH AND BLOOD:

Acts 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other

name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

Hebrews 9:15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new

covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions

under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the

promise of the eternal inheritance.

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to

obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that

whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to

those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power

of God.

Romans 5:9-10 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood,

we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies

we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more,

having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Colossians 1:9-14 (VS. 13-14) He has delivered us from the power of

darkness and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in

whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the

forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Hebrews 9:22 And according to the law almost all things are purged

with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.

BY JESUS, HIS NAME, DEATH AND BLOOD (CONTINUED):

1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible

things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by

tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as

of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

BY THE MERCY OF GOD:

Matthew 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy,

and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners

to repentance.

Luke 1:71, 77-78 [prophecies from the Old Testament] 71 That we

should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate

us; To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his

holy covenant;... 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by

the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God;

whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

Romans 9:15-16, 18 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I

will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have

compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that

runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. 18 Therefore hath he mercy

on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

Romans 9:23-24 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on

the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us,

whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

Romans 11:30-33 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet

have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: Even so have these also

now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.

For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he

might have mercy upon all. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom

and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways

past finding out!

2 Corinthians 4:1 Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have

received mercy, we faint not; But have renounced the hidden things of

dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God

deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves

to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

Galatians 6:16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on

them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love

wherewith he loved us,

1 Timothy 1:12-16 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled

me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who

was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I

obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace

of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in

Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all

acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of

whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me

first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to

them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

2 Timothy 1:18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the

Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at

Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Titus 3:3-5 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient,

deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and

envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and

love of God our Savior toward man appeared, Not by works of

righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved

us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace,

that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a

lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1 Peter 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the

people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained

mercy.

Jude :21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of

our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

II SALVATION THROUGH VARIOUS SOURCES:

HOPE

Romans 8:24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is

not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?

CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD

Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My

Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your

old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions;... And it

shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be

saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,

as the Lord has said, among the remnant whom the Lord calls.

Acts 2:16-17, 37-38 "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour

out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall

prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream

dreams.... Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and

said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what

shall we do? Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you

be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and

you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for

the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For "whoever

calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Acts 22:16 "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and

wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord."

PRAYER

James 5:15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord

will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

WIVES/HUSBANDS (By their example and steadfastness)

1 Corinthians 7:16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save

your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your

wife?

FOOLISHNESS OF PREACHING

1 Corinthians 1:18, 21 "For the message of the cross is foolishness to

those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power

of God.... For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom

did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message

preached to save those who believe."

THE GOSPEL

Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is

the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew

first and also for the Greek."

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel

which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you

stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I

preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to

you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our

sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He

rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,"

Editor's note: Paul said they were saved by the gospel then he

identifies it:

- verse 3 christ died

- verse 4 was buried

- verse 4 rose the 3rd day

It (the gospel) is something he preached, they received and stood

in.

Mark calls his writing the gospel, the "good news" about Jesus,

Mark 1:1 "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son

of God." Paul says we are saved by the gospel and refers to the

death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.

We obviously are not saved by the "facts" of the gospel, yet we

are told we must OBEY the gospel...

Romans 10:16 "But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah

says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"

1 Peter 4:17 "For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house

of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those

who do not obey the gospel of God?

2 Thessalonians 1:6-9 "since it is a righteous thing with God to repay

with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are

troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with

His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who

do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord

Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction

from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,"

Editor's Note: How can we obey the gospel of Jesus, the good

news of His death, burial and resurrection? Paul the Christians

at Rome that when they were yet sinners they obeyed that form of

doctrine and it made them free from sin.

Romans 6:17-18 "But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin,

yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were

delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of

righteousness."

Editor's Note: The definition of doctrine (didache in the

Greek): "teaching, that which is taught"

Two parallel truths:

- Obey the gospel and be saved

- Obey that form of doctrine and be saved

Notice what those people in Romans 6 did who had obeyed from the

heart:

Romans 6:3-6 "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized

into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were

buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was

raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also

should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in

the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness

of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with

Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should

no longer be slaves of sin."

Editor's Note: - the old man was crucified (died to sin)

- buried in a watery grave

- rose to walk a new life

"THE GOSPEL" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) "OBEY THE GOSPEL"

DEATH REPENTANCE

BURIED BAPTISM

RESURRECTION RAISED TO WALK A NEW LIFE

Notice how this ties back to what Jesus said in the great

commission:

Mark 16:15 "And He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the

gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be

saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned'."

III MAN'S PART

BELIEF - FAITH

Romans. 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is

the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew

first and also for the Greek.

Mark 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who

does not believe will be condemned.

Acts 16:31 So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you

will be saved, you and your household."

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through

wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the

message preached to save those who believe.

Romans 9:33 As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone

and rock of offense, and whoever believes on Him will not be put to

shame."

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten

Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have

everlasting life.

Luke 7:50 Then He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in

peace.

Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and

believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will

be saved.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he

who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of

those who diligently seek Him.

Acts 10:43 "To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name,

whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins."

1 Peter 1:8 whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see

Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of

glory, receiving the end of your faith--the salvation of your souls.

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He

who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever

lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

Ephesians 1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of

truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you

were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

1 Corinthians 1:21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through

wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the

message preached to save those who believe.

REPENTANCE

2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation,

not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you

be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and

you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 3:19 "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be

blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of

the Lord,

CONFESSION

Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and

believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will

be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with

the mouth confession is made to salvation.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive

us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Acts 8:36b-37 [Example] "...see here is water, what doth hinder me to

be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart,

thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is

the Son of God."

BAPTISM

Mark 16:15-16 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach

the gospel to every creature. "He who believes and is baptized will be

saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit,

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you

be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and

you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 22:16 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and

wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'

Colossians 2:10-12 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all

principality and power. In Him you were also circumcised with the

circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of

the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism,

in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of

God, who raised Him from the dead.

1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us, namely

baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a

good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

WORKS, OBEDIENCE, RIGHTEOUSNESS

James 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of

wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able

to save your souls.

James 14-24 (verses 14, 17, 19, 24) What does it profit, my brethren,

if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save

him?... Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is

dead.... You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the

demons believe--and tremble!... You see then that a man is justified

by works, and not by faith only.

Hebrews 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal

salvation to all who obey Him,

Colossians 2:10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all

principality and power. In Him you were also circumcised with the

circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of

the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism,

in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of

God, who raised Him from the dead.

Matthew 25:31-46 (verses 31-40) "When the Son of Man comes in His

glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne

of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will

separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his

sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but

the goats on the left. "Then the King will say to those on His right

hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for

you from the foundation of the world: 'for I was hungry and you

gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and

you took Me in; 'I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you

visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.' Then the righteous

will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed

You, or thirsty and give You drink? 'When did we see You a stranger

and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 'Or when did we see You

sick, or in prison, and come to You?' "And the King will answer and say

to them, Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the

least of these My brethren, you did it to Me."
