DETAIL

Christy "Matty" Matthewson was one of baseball's early greats.
He played for the New York Giants starting in 1900 and still holds the record for the lowest lifetime ERA in the National League.
After being asked by a reporter what his best pitch was, he replied "Anybody's best pitch is the one the batters ain't hitting that day."

Honest and to the point.

His baseball fame was equal to his personal character and he had the nickname of "The Christian Gentleman" because of his charisma and clean lifestyle.
Matty played in 1916 for Cincinatti and went to serve his country the following year. After he enlisted in WWI he became Captain of a chemical division and was accidently exposed to mustard gas, later developing tuberculosis.
He died in 1925 at the age of 45.
Matty also has the honor of being one of the "first five" inaugural members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
