SKY KING
recordTheme
Sky King hit our tv's in 1951 and lasted until 1954. Kirby Grant was Sky King, Gloria Winter was Penny, Ron Hagerthy was Clipper and Chubby Johnson was Jim Bell. The ranch was named the "Flying Crown Ranch" and the famous plane was called the "Songbird".
There were some great episodes where Sky King would chase down the bad guys with his airplane while radioing the ranch or the sheriff on where to pick them up.

ANDYS GANG
record

Another great kids show stared Andy Devine with his fellow castmates froggy, midnight (the cat) and squeaky. Andy had a story telling segment that was my favorite and one of his great quotes was "plunk your magic twanger froggy". One of his famous advertisers was Buster Brown shoes.

MICKEY MOUSE CLUB
record
Back in the fifties there was no cable and the Mickey Mouse Club show wasn't broadcast locally, so in order to watch it we had to turn our antenna (by hand for a year) south. In mid 1956 we finally got a gadget that turned it automatically with a remote type box from inside the house. A great invention, especially in the winter.
Anyway, the club stars were all kids and the ones on the show in the earlier days were: Sharon Baird, Bobby Burges, Lonnie Burr, Tommy Cole, Annette Funicello, Darlene Gillespie, Cubby O'Brian, Karen Pendelton, Doreen Tracy and co-hosts Roy Williams and Jimmy Dodd.
Annette went on to do many movies and became one of Disney's biggest stars.

AMERICAN BANDSTAND
record

American Bandstand began in 1952 as "Bob Horn's Bandstand". In 1957 a young man named Dick Clark took over as host and American Bandstand took off. It ran until 1964 in Philadelphia. Many of our teen idols got their start on that show.
Many of us learned the new dance steps by watching this show and we all had our favorite dance couples that we watched for everyday. I do believe that this was the very first interactive show. When we watched we danced and sang along.
