Bill "Joe Witt" Wittenberg, who played for the "Dawgs", vividly remembers this game..."The photo (above) is of the 'Dawg' fans attending the SECOND 'Dawg vs. Civil Engineers' game. Regrettably the Dawgies lost the first game but WE CAME BACK for the second game and won by a WIDE MARGIN! There was such a buildup for the second game that Col. Barnes, SLK base commander, brought-on 'extra' SPs for more security! In fact, more than 250 people attended that game. It was 'four deep' with 85% of the people standing along the fence line...there were ONLY two bleachers that held about 30 folks each! The banner being held-up, shows a 'plunger, plunging a Civil Engineer guy down a commode'...
I suggested 'plunging the Civil Engineer boys down the commode' during the preceding Mid Shifts. That's where the idea for the banner design came from. I remember Col. Barnes and our Flight Commander, Jim "LT" Hansen, having a 'great laugh' about the banner but the Civil Engineers' OIC did NOT laugh. All three officers stood on the Dawgie side for half of the game and on the Civil Engineers side for the other half...JUST TO SHOW A 'COMMAND PRESENCE'...!!!" [23 July 2009] Bill Wittenberg.
