The Clear "Mutashabihat"

The only knowledge we have of God is through the Quran. Although we may possess good common sense, without the Quran it is infinitely difficult to establish good conduct in all our endeavours.

Satan, in his self appointed role as corrupter and disrupter, has to make it his prime objective to keep mankind as far away from the Quran as possible. Only then will satan succeed.

In the so-called "Islamic" world, satan has successfully done this through the office of the ulema. The ulema have thrown up various arguments to keep people away from the Quran. It starts with the ridiculous:

  1. The ulema say we cannot touch the Quran without having performed the ablution. "This is to respect the Quran" so they say. There is no basis for this satanic idea in the Quran. With the Quran available on CD-ROM's, laser disc and the Internet the foolishness of this teaching has become even more evident. Some ulema now say that this ruling applies to the Quran in book form only!
  2. They say that women who are menstruating cannot touch the Quran, pray to God or fast. Again there is no basis for this satanic teaching in the Quran. The ulema's desired end is to keep women from even reading the Quran, praying to God or observing the fast. Then it moves to the diabolical. The satanic ulema say that you should not read the Quran without the guidance of the ulema. Otherwise satan will step in to be your teacher. Real fancy footwork here by the satanic ulema. What they mean is that with their satanic guidance, we can be manipulated easily!
  3. Then they start contradicting themselves. They say that there are verses in the Quran that are not clear. They say that what is known as "mutashabihat" means "unclear verses". According to them then, God in His infinite Wisdom has revealed teachings that are not clear. They twisted the meaning of the following verse to support their heresy. "He has sent down this scripture containing verses that are "muhkamat" (clear) which form the essence of the scripture and verses that are "mutashabihat" (not clear)" Surah 3:7.
  • Their rendering of "mutashabihat" as "not clear" is incorrect. We will explain why. But first bear in mind the following:
      1. It is impossible that the Almighty God, out of His infinite Wisdom would reveal a "book of guidance which has no doubts in it whatsoever, a beacon for the righteous" (Surah 2:2) to "bring you out of the darkness into the light" (Surah 33:43) and than turn around and tell us that this book has unclear teachings in it too. This does not sound logical. Hence all the verses must be clear. There cannot be any "unclear" verses.
      2. If there are "unclear" verses in the Quran then God in His infinite Mercy would have surely marked them out carefully so that we may know which ones they are. Otherwise there will be an endless quest just to decide which verses are clear and "unclear" - after which only we can begin to read and apply only those verses that are clear. But there is no need to do this because God is indeed Merciful and all His verses are clear.
      3. Assuming that there are "unclear" verses in the Quran, and assuming that we can segregate the clear verses from the "unclear" verses, what do we do with the "unclear" verses? Do we ignore them? What then is the purpose of God revealing these "unclear" verses in the first place?
      4. Some ulema say that only the ulema can understand the true meaning of these "unclear" verses. Only the ulema can make such moronic statements. But again let us grant the ulema their arrogance for a minute. Once they have understood the meanings of these "unclear" verses with whatever special faculties accorded them, these verses are not "unclear" anymore. Therefore once again the arguments fall flat.

There are no such things as "unclear" verses in the Quran. God's teachings are always clear. This can be seen "clearly" in the following verse:

"We have revealed to you clear revelations ("ayatin baiyinatin"), and only the wicked will disbelieve therein". Surah 2:99

The Quran has clear revelations. Those who are wicked will say the revelations are not clear. They disbelieve. - "We thus reveal these clear revelation ("ayatin baiyinatin"), then God guides whomever He wills". Surah 22:16

Note that these two verses are definitely "muhkamat" in that they are very clear in what they are saying. Surah 2:185 and 2:209 also carry the same message. Hence the whole Quran is a clear revelation. Otherwise it cannot be a book of guidance.

The word "mutashabihat" in Surah 3:7 has been wrongly interpreted. Most suprisingly this misinterpretation only occurs in Surah 3:7. In all other "mutashabihat" in the Quran, the word is correctly understood for what it really means. Let us quote a few examples here to see what it really means.

"God is the one who created gardens, trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and vegetation of various tastes, and olives and pomegranates, fruits that are similar yet dissimilar ("mutashabihan wa ghairu mutashabihan"). Surah 6:141

"And We produce gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranate, fruit that are similar yet dissimilar ("mutashabihan wa ghairu mutashabihan"). Surah 6:99

"Have they found idols who created similar to the creations (fatashabbahal khalku) of God". Surah 13:16

There are numerous other occurrences of the word "mutashabihan" and its derivatives throughout the Quran and they all carry the same meaning "SIMILAR". They do not carry the meaning "not clear". There is no reason for the word "mutashabihat" to carry the meaning "not clear" exclusively in Surah 3:7 only, while in the rest of the Quran it carries the meaning "SIMILAR".

Let us now look at the full verse of surah 3:7 again.

"He is the one who revealed to you this scripture, with verses that are CONCLUSIVE ("muhkamat"), for they are the essence of the scripture. Other verses are SIMILAR ("mutashabihat"). No one knows the correct interpretation thereof except God those who are well founded in knowledge. They say, "We believe in all the revelations, they all came from our Lord". Indeed only those who possess intelligence will take heed". Surah 3:7

Indeed there are verses in the Quran that are repeated or whose message is repeated over and over again sometimes in slightly different versions. Those who have disease in their heart will dwell on the mutashabihat verses and make mountains out of thin air - which will confuse people and lead them, astray.

There are no unclear verses in the Quran.
