Recruiting Skills Tape Filming - Important Information to Know
DON'T PROCRASTINATE! If you plan on contacting colleges about attending their school and possibly playing softball. Get your video filmed sometime during your JUNIOR year, preferably before July 1st, so if a coach asks for one you can send it without delay.
The filming session will last approximately two hours depending on the number of positions taped. If your timeline is short (within a week) you will be responsible for getting a field that has adequate amenities (i.e. bases, electricity for pitching machine and the capability to line the field), the permit for field use and any associated costs. If given at least two weeks notice, SBS can obtain the field for filming
There is a pre-payment fee of $50.00 for the filming session, which will be deducted from the final price upon completing the video. (applies to non-SBSA students only)
If possible wear your team uniform as it looks more professional and the school you send the tape to may very well contact your ASA or high school coach. If you don't have a uniform to wear, make sure to wear a practice shirt and sweats or shorts that are matching and are appropriate.
Do not stress - forget that you are being filmed, but bring your “A” game. Give an all out 100% effort as if you were playing in a championship game. Enjoy the moment and challenge yourself. Lack of effort or apparent disinterest or casualness can't be hidden by editing. College coaches receive hundreds of videos and if they see any of the above characteristics in the video they will probably not waste their time.
Bring a couple of friends to help take throws or run. If you are a pitcher you will need a catcher and they should wear full gear during the pitching film session.
The film session will include DEFENSE at however many positions you want to film. The objective is to highlight your strong points such as fielding technique, fielding range, arm strength, and throwing accuracy for the skill sets required for your particular position. The OFFENSIVE part includes BUNTING (sacrifice, drag, and slap from both sides if appropriate) HITTING, and BASE RUNNING (if speed is one of your strengths). The objective here is to highlight your full compliment of offensive skills - the more versatile the better.
After editing the video will be approximately 5 minutes long (give or take a minute or so). In speaking with coachs that appears to be an ideal length. If the video is too long they won't watch it all - they simply don't have the time given the number they receive. They don't care about glitz and glamour such as music or animations etc. so the sound is muted.
The video includes: 1. an introductory clip with your picture and identifying information: name, position, high school and location, ASA team and division; 2. a Defensive chapter separated by position title clips; 3. an offensive chapter separated into Bunting/Slapping and Hitting sections; 4. Base running if appropriate; 5. a profile page with picture, personal statistics i.e. height and weight, year of graduation, GPA/SAT and contact information parents name, phone and e-mail. If you want your team website included we can also add that.
Editing takes two to three weeks depending on your time line - the more time the better the product. There is an extra charge for rush orders less than two weeks. The base price includes 5 windows media video CDs in jewel cases that are viewable on the computer in windows media player. Instructions for viewing are also included. They are labeled with your name, position(s) and ASA team or high school whichever you prefer. DVD's and Video CDs are an option, but there are several different formats, which create compatibility issues when playing in different brands of DVD players.
