The Story Behind Ki Energy:

Basic Ki Blasts:

Attacks in the DB/Z/GT series work on a basic principle. The principle works on the idea that there is a power or energy (called ki) in your body. The energy can be called upon when the individual concentrates on the energy within him and, using his mind and will, shapes it into a weapon, for example a ball of this ki energy which, as directed by the will of the users mind, could, say, explode upon impact of another object. The size of the ball and the intensity and range of the explosion is determined by how immense the person’s concentration of ki inside the body, or power level, is. The person could call energy and shape it into his/her hands and then point it at something and use the their mind to continuously fire energy, thus an energy beam.

Developed Technique-Attacks:

Technique-Attacks are more complicated then basic ki blasts, but ultimately more powerful. A good example is the kamehameha, Goku’s trademark attack. Not only is it more powerful then a normal ki-beam, due to the fact that he gathers a lot of energy in his palms before firing it, but he’s also added a technique to it, which allows him to direct the kamehameha beam whichever way he pleases. A technique-attack must be named before, after, or during its use to operate properly. This is required because the person using it must trigger the knowledge he gained when he first learned it, enabling him to remember how he performed it the first time. Another example is the destructo-disk. It’s an energy disk, but the technique added to it through study, practice, and a powerful mind caused the normal energy of the disk to change, bending to the will of the user, and changing to what the person using it wants, in this case causing the energy to be able to cut through anything. Other examples are the Special Beam Cannon, Final Flash, and Masenko. There are many, many others. You can tell a technique attack apart from a regular ki energy attack by seeing if the person using it names what he is doing, or says something while doing it. Saying “Take THIS!” doesn’t count, but if you hear someone say “Ka-me-ha-me-HA!!!”, first of all, it’s a technique-attack, and second, you had better run.

Techniques:

Techniques are similar to technique attacks. They are the technique without the attack. To put it another way, they do something not intended to do damage, and usually don’t show outward signs of ki energy gathering. A good example is the infamous Instant Transmission technique. It requires to be studied and learned before it can be used, and you must say the name of it before you use it, but it doesn’t do anything special to ki energy. At least not on the outside. Ki energy is actually everywhere. That’s why attacks like the Spirit Bomb (actually the Spirit Bomb is the only one I can think of that does this) can call ki energy from everything, even the emptiness of space. The Instant Transmission uses the ki energy to change the persons body into light, a perfect example that ki energy can be used to do almost anything if you study what you want to do and create a technique that makes the ki energy do whatever task you choose. In theory, ki energy can do anything, you just need enough of it, and you have to learn or create a technique to do something. The more difficult the task you want the ki energy to do, the stronger you must be to learn it and more time must be spent practicing it.

Does Ki Exist In Real Life?:

Does ki energy exist in real life? Maybe, maybe not. I’m not talking about enough ki in one person to fire an energy attack, either that does not exist or no human has harnessed enough ki for one. Yet. Ki could exist in people’s day-to-day lives, however small the amount. Have you ever noticed how when you get really determined to do something, say, run a race, you seem to go faster and do better than you usually do? That could be because your determination to do well calls on some of your ki energy to help strengthen you body in whatever you are trying to do, in this case go faster. Also, ki might work on other parts of you body too. When you REALLY need to do well on a test, do you sometimes notice that when you clear your mind and concentrate, focusing on doing well, you usually do well, or at least better? That could be because the ki is being used to help your mind, making it think better. So for all of you devoted freaks out there who love Dragon Ball/Z/GT, run out there, work out to increase you power level (concentration of ki in your body), focus your mind on an attack, create a name for the technique that serves the purpose of what you are trying to achieve, and keep working on it until you get it right. A good test would be to see if you can create a technique and a name for it that will focus you mind and ki energy to making you run faster. Tell me if it works. Oh, and for all you normal and semi-normal people who don’t think any of this is true, go laugh at the devoted freaks, but be prepared in case they create a technique that makes your heart explode in you chest.
