mongoose
Balcony's alter ego. My owner is James Bond, the coolest owner a goosey could ask for. Below, everything you ever wanted to know about mongi. Be sure to scroll down! |
| The mongoose is a member of the family Viverridae, genus Herpestes, which includes civets and genets. The mongoose is also related to the meerkat of Southern Africa. They originated in Africa and Asia, and were worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, but now may be found in many parts of the world, including Hawaii. Because as carnivores they may damage the ecobalance of native wildlife, their importation is forbidden into the United States. Mongi or Mongooses (mongeese is not a correct pluralization) feed on rodents, insects, and reptiles. They often travel in bands. Mongi are best known for attacking large poisonous snakes. They have some small immunity to the venom, but generally win a fight due to their agility and quickness, not to any special tolerance to the poison. In Africa, mongoose bands may live in termite mounds, and have a fairly complex social structure wherein only the dominant female and male produce and raise young. The average mongoose is about two feet long, including the tail. |
