Noteworthy and/or Hit LPs

1973

Tiny Dancer's additions:

Abba - Ring Ring

Abba's debut (not released in the US), they had their first hit with the title track.

America - Hat Trick

("Muskrat Love")

A couple of years before Captain and Tennille had a big hit with "Muskrat Love" America released their original beautiful version.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Bachman-Turner Overdrive

("Blue Collar")

Debut album of a fab Canadian group formed by Randy Bachman previously of The Guess Who.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Bachman-Turner Overdrive II

("Let It Ride," "Takin' Care Of Business")

And the follow-up which my sources tell me was released the same year. This one broke them into the American market with two huge hits.

The Carpenters - Now And Then

This great double album covered today's music on the Now side ("Sing," "This Masquerade," "The End Of The World") and oldies on the Then side ("Johnny Angel," "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes").

Jim Croce - Life And Times

("One Less Set Of Footsteps," "Roller Derby Queen," "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," "These Dreams")

The last album he released during his lifetime ironically contained his biggest hit "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown".

Jim Croce - I Got A Name

("I Got A Name," "Lover's Cross," "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song")

Released two months after his untimely death in a plane crash in September 1973.

John Denver - John Denver's Greatest Hits

("Take Me Home Country Roads," "Follow Me," "Leaving On A Jet Plane," "Poems Prayers And Promises," "Rocky Mountain High")

Neil Diamond - Rainbow

("Everybody's Talkin'," "Both Sides Now," "Until It's Time For You To Go," "Suzanne," "Mr. Bojangles," "If You Go Away")

One of my favorite Neil albums. All covers but he made them his own.

Neil Diamond - Hot August Night

("Solitary Man," "Cherry Cherry," "Sweet Caroline," "Red Red Wine," "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," "Play Me," "Cracklin' Rosie," "I Am ... I Said," "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show")

Hot stuff indeed, this was a huge seller for Neil in a year that saw him release three hit albums.

Neil Diamond - Jonathan Livingston Seagull soundtrack

("Be," "Dear Father," "Skybird," "Lonely Looking Sky")

And here's the perfect 70s Neil album, IMHO, I played it to death. The movie made no sense to me at the time (I was 9) but the music touched me deeply. "Lost ... on a painted sky"

Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown

("Sundown," "Carefree Highway")

Barry Manilow - Barry Manilow I

("Could It Be Magic")

The debut of one of the decade's biggest stars. You may not want to admit it now but you bought his albums, oh yes you did, don't lie to me now ;-)

Olivia Newton-John - Let Me Be There

Linda Ronstadt - Don't Cry Now

("Desperado")

The album wasn't a big hit but she did a good job with The Eagles' beautiful "Desperado" which seems only fitting.

Paul Simon - There Goes Rhymin' Simon

("Kodachrome," "Something So Right," "American Tune," "Loves Me Like A Rock")

Four big hits including one of Simon's best songs ever, IMHO, "American Tune".

Three Dog Night - Cyan

("Let Me Serenade You," "Shambala")
