[Maria comes up to Mr. Hooper’s store, which, for some reason, is closed.]

Maria: Oh, it’s closed!

[Sam asks her what’s wrong, and Maria explains that she’d hoped to get some lunch at the store.
Sam offers to make lunch for her.]

Maria: I don’t know, Sam. I’ve never had my lunch made by a machine.

Sam: Trust me, Maria. What would you like for lunch?

Maria [after thinking a minute]: Well, let’s see. I think I’d like a bowl of chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding.

Sam: A bowl of chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding!

[Forgotten lines? A whirring sound comes from inside Sam, followed by a loud squish. A door in Sam pops open, revealing a tray containing chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding — all in one bowl!]

Maria: Oh, Sam ...!

[Sam says something I don’t recall.]

Maria: You see, most people like to have their lunch separate. A bowl of chicken noodle soup, and then a tuna fish sandwich, and then chocolate pudding ... not all together!

[Oscar goes over to the store, wanting to have lunch there, but he finds it closed.
Sam offers to make lunch for him.]

Sam: I made a mistake with Maria’s lunch, but now I have been corrected. I will now make your lunch perfectly.

Oscar: Okay. Let’s see, I’d like a bowl of chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding.

[Sam possibly says something, and we hear him whirring again.]

Oscar: Hey, you broken-down tin can, is this gonna take all day?

Maria: Oscar, he’s doing you a favor!

[Sam’s door pops open, revealing a tray containing a bowl of chicken noodle soup, another of chocolate pudding, and a tuna fish sandwich on a plate.]

[Forgotten lines.]

Oscar: I asked for chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding.
But I didn’t want ‘em in separate dishes! I want ‘em together, all in one bowl!

Maria: Wait a minute, Oscar, I can fix this. [She hands him the first tray.]
Chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding, all in one bowl.
That’s more to your liking, isn’t it?

Oscar: Oh, yeah!

Maria [picking up the other tray]: And I’m going to have this delicious lunch:
chicken noodle soup, a tuna fish sandwich, and chocolate pudding, all separate. Thanks, Sam!

[Oscar and Maria both leave.]

Sam: I do not understand this.
