Things That I Remember
sung by Ernie (Steve Whitmire) and Bert (Frank Oz)
NOTE: This is sung by the new voice of Ernie, as you can see from the above credits, but the flashbacks all involve Jim Henson's Ernie. *sniff* I hope it doesn't mess up the song for you, but I've described the scenes in brackets to add to the overall feeling. A lovely tribute to Ernie and Bert's friendship that must have been very hard for Frank Oz to do.
(the scene is Ernie and Bert's bedroom at night)
(spoken)
Ernie: Bert? (we hear Bert snoring) Bert? Bert?
Bert: Huh? Wha-wh-what? Huh? (waking up sounds)
Ernie: Hey, Bert? I was just thinking of some of the things you can do with your head, Bert.
Bert: (huge sigh) Oh, Ernie.
Ernie: You know, Bert, one of the things you can do with your head is to remember.
Bert: (big sigh) Ohhhh.
Ernie: You can remember with your head, Bert.
Bert: Great, great, Ernie. (trying to turn his face to the pillow, not pleased)
Ernie: And I was just thinking about some of the things I remember best. (music starts)
Bert: Good.
Ernie: Things I really like to remember, Bert.
(sung)
Ernie: Things that I remember
Times that never end
Favorite things inside my head
Special friend to friend
Roads we've walked together
(E&B walking through the jungle)
All the stops we've made
(in the mummy's tomb)
Jokes we've told and songs we've sung
(first the scene where Ernie writes a shopping list with chocolate pudding, then the two dancing side-by-side in their jammies from "But I Like You")
And silly games we've played
(dressed up as cavemen, then Ernie with socks on his ears)
And there are chilly days in winter
(Ernie cramming a wooly hat on Bert's head)
Out laughing in the snow
(out in the snow with a snowman, Bert is twirled around as Ernie whips off Bert's scarf to put on the snowman)
And lazy days in summer
(Ernie burying Bert in the sand at the beach)
With no place much to go
(in a boat, from the "Here fishee, fishee, fishee" skit, the fish flying into the boat)
Each day has its memories
And when the day is through
Things that I remember
Are the things I did with you
(spoken)
Ernie: You see what I mean, Bert?
Bert: (now sitting up in bed, much calmer than before) Yeah, I kinda do, Ernie. And you know what? I kinda feel the same way.
(sung)
Bert: Things that I remember
Safe inside my head
Rubber ducks and pigeons
(Ernie in the bath with rubber duckie, then Bernice, the pigeon, playing checkers)
And the different books we read
(Bert's trying to read as Ernie stands next to his chair with binoculars and a pith helmet on his head)
You took my favorite pillow
(the ending of "Dance Myself To Sleep", as Bert and his bed are taken out of the room by the sheep)
Used my favorite chair
(E&B at the movies, a woman with a huge hat seated in front of Bert so he can't see)
When you're gone I miss you
(Bert sits up in bed and Ernie's bed is empty)
And I'm happy when you're here
(Ernie pulls off Bert's nose and puts it on the clay statue bust of Bert's head he's made)
And there's an arm around the shoulder
(the end shot from "But I Like You", Ernie's arm around Bert's shoulder, their heads touching ear-to-ear)
And a friend I'll always keep
(Ernie brings a live puppy to Bert in their apartment, probably the "Godzilla, the wonder dog" skit)
And nights so full of talking
(Bert's shaking like crazy in their bedroom as Ernie yacks away)
We never fell asleep
(under the stars during a camping trip)
Each day has its memories
And when the day is through
Things that I remember
Are the things I did with you
Ernie: (spoken) Yeah, I know what you mean, Bert.
Both (sung): Things that I remember
Are the things I did with you
(spoken as they each snuggle into their beds)
Bert: Goodnight, Ernie.
Ernie: Goodnight, Bert.
