'OLDHAM LANCASHIRE'
SOME OLD SIGHTS
While everyone is preparing to
celebrate the Millennium, this Town is celebrating a year earlier
than everyone else. The reason for this is that it is 150 years ago
that Queen Victoria granted the Charter of Incorporation, thus making
Oldham a Borough in its own right.
On June 17th 1899 , all the main streets
and all the side streets were decorated
for the Jubilee of the Charter of
Incorporation.
People from miles around came for the
towns celebrations and droves of people
lined the streets as seen in this
photograph which was probably taken in the
morning, during one of the many events of
the day.
The Council, each member wearing a rose,
drove in landaus to the new playground at
Beresford Street, given to the town by
Samuel,Joseph and William Dronsfield.
The playground was opened by the Mayor Councillor Jackson Brierley, whose day
had started at 9 a.m. with the
presentation of a gift from the Chief Constable,on behalf of the police force,
whose Jubilee it also was.
Another of the planned events was a special meeting of the Town Council.
The Mayor outlined the progress made in fifty years, during which the
population had grown by a staggering 100,000.
Later a luncheon at the Town Hall, with many guests including the Mayors
of neighbouring towns. Then, with bands playing through the streets coloured
with flags, moved the largest procession of local organisations that the
town had ever seen.
