Butcher's 12-Step Program to a Better Myth |

There have been many problems with silent and overt OOS in playing the
Quarter-Finals, notably in Civil Order vs The Violators. To this end, I have
written up a consistent sequence of steps that competitors should follow in
order to try and get rid of this problem.
I would like every competitor involved in this match to follow these steps
before their match. Please do not play any games of Myth between
the following of the program and the match itself; ideally we want a completely
clean installation in order for this test to work correctly.
- Save any films and .gor files that you want to keep. DO NOT put these
back in your Myth folder until after the match has completed.
- Delete your Myth directory. If you own a PC, use the 'Uninstall
Myth:TFL' program that came with Myth. If you own a Macintosh, make sure
you delete any Myth Preferences files from your System Folder:Preferences.
- If you own a Macintosh, look in your Extensions directory. Remove any
Extensions that are known to cause trouble with Myth. I believe this list
includes libMoto, RAM Doubler (a.k.a. Satan-In-A-Box), and Speed Doubler.
- Reboot your system.
- Re-install Myth:TFL from the CD-ROM that came in your Myth:TFL box. Do
a Large Install if at all possible. If not possible, make absolutely
certain to tell everyone you are playing with that you only have the
Small Install. That way if problems _do_ occur, we can try a game between
Large-Install-only people. And try not to feel too insecure about your
install size.
- Download the v1.3b2 updater from ftp.bungie.com.
- Remove your Myth:TFL CD from the CD drive. IMPORTANT.
- Put the v1.3b2 updater in a TEMPORARY DIRECTORY. Do NOT run it from
the Myth:TFL directory. Run the updater. You should not need to select
your Myth application, it should find it automatically. Delete the updater after using it.
- Download Keep Across The River and unzip it. Do not install it in your
tags:plugins directory yet! Do not put it in your Myth folder! Just put it
somewhere that Myth could never ever find it.
- At one-minute intervals during the games, I will yell out the troop
percentages that I see remaining. If these do not match those which your
Myth application is reporting, say so immediately. We will stop the game.
- Because it seems likely that the silent OOS errors are due to memory
corruption or incorrect tag caching, if we _do_ get any silent or overt
OOS, every competitor (and any observers) will quit the game, quit the
Myth application, delete the scrap.gor and submesh cache files, and
re-start Myth. Hopefully this will remove any repeated errors like those
which we got last time.
- Finally, we must all acknowledge that our enjoyment of Myth lies
solely in the palm of Bungie themselves, and give thanks for what a great
game it is, when it all works correctly. Repeat after me:
O Bungie, who art in Chicago
Hallowed be thy name
Thy Myth II come
Thy will be done
On bungie.net as it is on the metaserver
Give us this game our daily carnage
And forgive us our backstabbings
As we forgive those who newbie rush us
And lead us not into elevated dwarves
But deliver us from wightings
For thine is the power, the mind control lasers, forever and ever,
Game on.
- Butcher
