- Background - Childhood:John grew up on the colony world Aldiss Prime. It was on the edge of the Cardassian border and was a mineral-rich world. John's parents, Willem and Marta, were both engineers (Willem- civil; Marta-mining) and John grew up a curious and well-loved child. He did well in school, was obedient, and was happy. Then the Cardassians attacked the planet in a 'border incident' and his parents and brother were killed. His sister survived and raised him. When she went to Starfleet Academy, he followed. He joined at 16, in her senior year.
- Background - Academy:John was a quick student but had a strong temper. He was almost expelled for a fight with the son of the Cardassian ambassador. Captain Jaroc Eldon, a Trill teaching a course in advanced tactics, took him under his wing. John soon focused his anger into appropriate diversions and graduated fifth in his class.
- Background - Cadet Cruise:John was assigned to the USS Hemingway under the command of Captain Eldon. He had a spotless record, was commended twice for bravery, and developed a method of jamming Cardassian targeting sensors.
- Personality Profile from Starfleet Medical:John is a difficult medical case. He was severely injured during a session of Cardassian torture and has a biomedical computer acting as a supplement to his central nervous system. He obtained a bioneural computer link without medical approval and has had several problems with feedback and suppression of REM sleep. He tends to operate on the leading edge of physical exhaustion and his bravery will most likely be the cause of an early demise.
