Obituary of the Death of John Hicks Wed.July 13, 1932

John Hicks who for many years lived at Matfield Green,Ks. died at his home in Emporia,Ks. Yesterday. Funeral arrangements had not been made.

Mr. Hicks was born November 24, 1851, at Gate Center, Mo. He came to Kansas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Hicks in the year 1863. They located at Matfield Green, Ks.

On March 12, 1872 Mr. Hicks was married to Miss Hannah Lake. Mrs. Hicks survives him, also seven children, Steve Hicks, of Bushong, Ks. Cash Hicks, of Watsonville, Ca., Mrs. Nell Thompson, of Orleans, Miss., Mrs. Maude Roatcap, of Olathe, Colo., Mrs. Clara Linuf, of Americus, and Mrs. Laura Taylor and Elra E. Hicks of Emporia, Ks.

While the Hicks family lived at Matfield Green, Ks. Mr. Hicks worked on the farm. In 1898 the family moved to Emporia,Ks. where he worked for the Santa Fe railroad. He was employed by the Santa Fe for about 20 years.

Funeral of John F. Hicks

The funeral services for John F. Hicks who died Wednesday, July 13, 1952 at his home at 28 Rural Street, Emporia, was held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Roberts-Blue funeral ? The Rev. A. J. Pauler, conducted the services after which interment was in the Maplewood Cemetery.

The six pallbearers were grandchildren of Mr. Hicks and were Jacob Hicks, Edward Hicks, Harold Taylor, George Taylor, Lloyd Finuf, and Leo Hicks.

Mr. Hicks is survived by seven children and 25 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, besides his wife making 27 direct descendants.

Those from this county who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs Ivan Finuf and children, of Elmdale, and Mrs. John Taylor, of Strong City.KS.

The Obituary of Mrs. Hannah E. Hicks Dead

Mrs. Hannah ELizabeth Hicks 28 Rural, died at 11:05 o'clock Sunday morning in the Newman Memorial County Hospital. She had been sick for 10 weeks. Mrs. Hicks was born in Maryetta, Ohio, October 4, 1855. Her maiden name was Hannah Elizabeth Lake, and her parents were Solomon and Betsy Lake. She came to Kansas in 1865, and lived first in Matfield Green, where she was married to John F. Hicks on March 12, 1872. They came to Emporia about 1899. Mr. Hicks died here July 18, 1932. Mrs. Hicks is survived by three sons, Steve Hicks, Bushong; Elra E. Hicks, Emporia, and Cash Hicks, and four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Thompson, Orleans, Mass.; Mrs. Maud Roatcap, Olathe, Colo; Mrs. Clara Finuf, Americus, and Mrs. Laura Taylor, Emporia. Twenty-five grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Roberts-Blue Funeral chapel. Rev. A.J. Pauler conducted the services. Interment was in Maplewood cemetery - Emporia Gazette.

Wed. Feb. 14, 1934 Mrs.Hicks was the mother of Mrs. E.W. Taylor and visted here many times while the Taylor family lived in Strong City before moving to Emporia.

Death of Mrs. John Hicks 2-14-1934

The death of Mrs. Hannah E. Hicks who for many years lived at Matfield Green, KS. occurred in the Newman hospital Sunday Morning. Mrs. Hicks who was 78 years of age, had been ill for many weeks.

The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the Roberts-Blue funeral home. The Rev. A.J. Pauler conducted the service and interment was made in the Maplewood cemetery at Emporia.Ks.

Mrs. Hicks' madin name was Hannah ELizabeth Lake. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Lake. She was born October 4, 1865, She was married March 12, 1872, to John F. Hicks and the family lived at Matfield Green for many years. In 1899 Mr. and Mrs. Hicks moved to Emporia. Mr. Hicks died there July 13, 1932

Mrs. Hicks is survived by seven children, Steve Hicks of Bushong, Elra E. Hicks of Emporia, Cash Hicks, Mrs. Nellie Thompson, of Orleans, Mass, Mrs. Maude Roatcap of Olathe, Colorado, Mrs. Clara Finuf, of Americus, and Mrs. Laura Taylor, of Emporia. She also leaves 25 grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

No documentation that is Hilyard Hicks's son. " Only conjector" Book-Ghost Settlement on the Prairie A Biography of Thurman, Kansas by Joseph V. Hickey", has information that Old Hilyard Hicks had written to his son Hilyard Stephen Hicks around the year of 1873 about 5 years before the Old Hilyard Hicks/Hix died, requesting for information on the whereabouts of his brother Samuel E. Hicks. The last heard from him was at Ft. Scott, in Fall of 1863 when he was a private in the 14 Kansas, Company horseshoer he was suppose to be 47 years old, this would make him born about 1826. In my military pension records I find
a listing for a Samuel E. Hicks 14 Kansas Cav. was married to a Nelly as his filing date for pension was Oct.8, 1879 # 314357 and his widow Pension # filed Jun 6, 1892 #551898 Ind. Terr. Samuel was injured shot in the right arm near shoulder, during a skirmish at Carthage, Missouri on Oct. 1, 1862 He was treated at Fort Scott for about a week. He was discharged June 27, 1865 MO. -Record Pension Records At age 51 years old he was 5 feet 8 inches tall light complexion light hair and blue eyes.
