"This Is The Way The World Ends"
Part Six

Elizabeth sat on the cot. Julie was taking her pulse.

Elizabeth: Julie, I am fine. Kyle is right. I am just really burnt out with all the moving and stuff.
Julie: Let's just make sure, alright?

  Elizabeth nodded. Julie smiled.

Julie: Now tell me what else has been going on. And don't hold anything back; even the littlest thing that you
think is nothing may be a symptom of something bigger.

  Elizabeth sighed.

Elizabeth: All right. I have been really tired.  It's weird.  I am fine for a while, then all of a sudden I feel wiped out
  and dizzy.

  Cassie walked into the room.

Julie: Is this a recurring thing?
Elizabeth: Yes but please, I don't want to alarm Kyle.
  Cassie: Is this everyday?
Elizabeth: Yes, especially in the mornings.

Cassie's eyes got wide. Julie gulped hard.

  Cassie: Do you get nauseous?
Elizabeth: Yes... sometimes in the morning I do.
Julie (concerned): Sweetie, do you have regular cycles?
Elizabeth (blushing): Yes, but not in the last two months.

The three women stood there staring at each other.

Elizabeth: No, you don't think I'm......
Julie: Let's not jump to any conclusions.
Cassie: Julie, how would you even test for that?
  Julie: I am not sure.
Cassie: There's a hospital in Tucson for collaborators.
Julie: No good, Elizabeth would be noticed in a heartbeat.
Elizabeth: So what do we do until then?
Julie: I guess until then the safe thing to do is assume that you are pregnant.
Cassie: Not to put a damper on anyone's parade here but...
Elizabeth: My alien chemistry.  Julie, what if I ....
Julie: Sweetie, we are going to have to deal with this the way we did with your mother's pregnancy.
Elizabeth: My mother.  Julie, what about my mother?
Cassie: I sent Kyle in to sit with her.

  Kyle smiled at Robin.

  Kyle: Hello, Robin.
Robin: I have missed you, Kyle.
Kyle: There wasn't a day that went by that Elizabeth didn't think about you.

Robin reached out her hand to Kyle. Kyle held it for a minute and tried to let go. Robin tightened her grasp
around Kyle's hand. Kyle gently shook her loose.

Kyle (clearing his throat): You need anything?
  Robin: Just you.

Kyle opened his mouth to correct her. Cassie walked into the room.

  Cassie: Kyle?

Kyle jumped up. Robin looked irked.

Kyle: Elizabeth.  Can I see her?
Cassie: She's in the other room.

Kyle walked out of the room, forgetting all about Robin. Robin rolled her eyes. Once again the world had
stopped for Elizabeth.  Robin watches as Cassie looks at her.

Robin: Sorry, I am just tired.
Cassie: It's funny.  You seemed much more happy to see Kyle than your own daughter.
Robin: Oh no, it's not that.
Cassie: Really?  I was hoping I would have someone on my side.
  Robin: I don't understand.
Cassie: My name is Cassie, and because of her my brother almost ended up dead.
  Robin: Your brother?
Cassie: I am sorry.  My name is Cassie. I'm Kyle's sister.
Robin: I don't see why you would blame my daughter for that.  Kyle makes his own choices.
Cassie: For whatever reason, I don't like your daughter and I am not going to pretend I do.

Robin watched Cassie intrigued.  She wondered if she could have an ally in Cassie. Cassie looked away and
walked toward the window. She could see Robin was interested in what Cassie was saying. Cassie had known
which buttons to push to get the right reactions out of Robin. Cassie walked out of the room. Robin wondered if
she had found an ally in Cassie.

Kyle briskly walked down the hall. The door to the examination room was still closed. Kyle's heart pounded.  So
much had happen since the war started. He had seen and been through so much very little truly scared him
anymore. This always did. The thought of something happening to Elizabeth. He remembered the first time they
ever met. How beautiful she was; his life was never the same after that. Elizabeth showed him what true love was.
He had hid nothing from her. He was always completely honest with her.  He remembered watching her walk into
The Leader's shuttle; he loved her too much to just let her go that easily. Kyle sat down for a moment, then
started pacing again. What could be taking so long? The door opened up.  Julie smiled at him.

  Kyle: What is it?
  Julie: Kyle, come in.

Kyle walked in and sat down next to Elizabeth. Julie closed the door and walked over to Sean's room. She looked
and saw Cassie standing outside the room. Julie looked at her. Her heart broke for her. She could see the struggle
in Cassie. Julie could see the innocent teenage girl in her wishing that Sean was alright. That he would wake up
and he would be the boy she fell in love with. Cassie heard Julie come closer. Julie watched Cassie's child-like
face harden into stone -- the face of the skilled fighter everyone else was so used to seeing.

Cassie: He will be awake soon.
Julie: Mike should be back soon too.
Cassie: You do realize if they are both spies where this leaves us, don't you?
Julie: Yes, I do.  Maybe that's the way it needs to end...
Cassie (with a far off look in her eyes): Tired of fighting for the world. Now you just want to fight to see
something go right in your life.
  Julie: Something like that.

Kyle looked into Elizabeth's eyes.  Elizabeth looked at him, fearfully.

Kyle: Whatever it is, I am not going anywhere.
  Elizabeth: Kyle, I...
Kyle: Does Julie think you are changing again?
  Elizabeth: Something like that.
Kyle: It doesn't matter. I love you.
Elizabeth: Kyle, Julie thinks I might be pregnant...
