  • AUGUST 1830
    Rioting in Belgian Opera House
  • OCTOBER 1830
    Belgians rise up, proclaiming independence of Belgium from Netherlands William I
  • DECEMBER 1830
    Big Five recognize de facto separation of the Belgian provinces from the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
  • JUNE 1831
    Powers announce selection of new king of the Belgians -- Leopold I, from German state of Saxe-Coburg.
  • AUGUST 1831
    William I reneges on armistice, subsequently plotting to attack Belgium. French called in by a reluctant Big Four to intervene. Operation successful.
  • NOVEMBER 1831
    Treaty of London signed to establish Belgium as free nation -- but neutral.
  • AUGUST 1839
    William I FINALLY recognizes Belgium as sovereign state.

    NB: In order to get a better insight into the Belgian revolution, it is perhaps best advisable to understand the July revolution that took place in France, but that aroused comparatively low disquiet.
