Oct. 1826

The Turks conceded Russia a virtual protectorate over Serbia and the Danubian Principalities (D.P.) of Moldavia and Wallachia (later Rumania). How did they manage to do so? By granting Russia the authority to guarantee the rights and priviledges of the inhabitants of these Balkan provinces of the Ott. Empire. They agreed further to recognize Russia's right to retain former territories on the east coast of the Black Sea and the Caucasus region, acquired before the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12. Finally, Russian merchantmen were permitted to obtain complete freedom of navigation on all domestic waterways of the Empire -- including the Turkish Straits.
