November 22, 1995 marked a turning point in the history of cinema and computer animation. It was the day that Toy Story was released to North American theatres--the world's first full-length computer generated movie. Disney's Toy Story was a box office success, both domestically and internationally, grossing more than US$354.3 million, demonstrating that computer generated movies were a viable option for movie studios and paving the way for future film release of this kind. Toy Story was the culmination of years of development in the field of computer animation by Pixar Animation Studios. Examining the roots of Pixar, its relationship with Disney, and technical developments will demonstrate the enormous undertaking: the creation of a full length computer generated movie. Looking at the process through which a movie like Toy Story goes through from initial concept to the final print--reveals the arduous, complex and enormous challenge that faced Pixar and it sets Pixar's accomplishment apart from other animation studios. Also, looking at the success of the movie will lead to a greater appreciation of the importance of Toy Story. Through the examination of the above, one can see the impact that this movie had on the development and use of computer animation in film.
