Dragonball:
One day, in the deep forests of Mt. Paizo, a young
girl in a motor cycle meets a small boy. She
fascinates the boy with the legend of the Dragonball,
saying once all 7 are collected, a mystical dragon
named Shen Lon will appear and grant the collector one
wish. Fascinated by the story, the young boy shows the
girl a small ball with 4 stars, saying his
grandfather's soul lives in it (now that he's passed
away). The girl identifies it as a genuine dragonball,
and she shows the young boy her own collection. They
introduce themselves. The young boy's name was Son
Goku. The girl's name was Buruma. And from that day
on, the greatest adventure known to all action cartoon
fans, young and old, rookie and hardcore fan, and non
anime to anime viewer alike, would begin. This was the
beginning of the adventures of Son Goku's life. This
was the turning point of Akira Toriyama's drawing
career. This was the beginning of all the fans, toys,
controversy, and kamehamehas. Enter the mystical world
of DRAGONBALL!

now the review...
Some might argue that the Dragonball series can't be
called anime, due to its unique style of design. Also,
some hardcore anime fans might totally ignore this
title, due to the fact that it's way too
commercialized in America and that they don't agree
too well with Akira Toriyama's way of designing his
characters (may I add that Akira Toriyama also worked
on the smash RPG hit Chrono Trigger), which totally
deviates from the big eye bishonen and bishojo styles
of standard anime titles. Two more details hardcore
anime fans will definitely not like about the
Dragonball series is the voice acting and censorship
of the American series, which seems to be the only
thing we can turn to in the western hemisphere without
going the extra few miles to the closest import store.
It seems everytime Funimation releases a new batch of
titles, it is plagued by flaws that keep a select few
away from it. The first batch had average to likeable
voice acting, but the censorship distorted the whole
series. With the second batch of released episodes,
there is less censorship, but the voice acting has
gone from zero to zilch to places not even angels dare
to tred. Yet, despite its totally unique look and
overseas problems, Dragonball is a pretty darn good
anime if you're into martial arts, comedy, action, a
little boob flash here and there (did I say boob? I
did not!), and down to Earth fun! Overall, anyone can
get into Dragonball! In my opinion, next to Sailor
Moon and the godlike status of Pokemon, it's one of
those generic anime titles that do very well in both
hemispheres, since the plotline can be appealing to
the viewers of both worlds. But I strongly suggest
that you go to the closest import store and buy the
subbed versions(before the store inevitably shuts
down), don't take the garbage Funimation provides you
with.
(score based on American title...)
overall score: 3.5/5
animation: 3 (too many scenes cut out distorts
continuity)
voice acting: 3.5- 1st series, 1.5- 2nd series
music: 3-1st series 3- 2nd series
(score based on original title straight from Japan)...
overall score: 4/5
animation: 4
music: 4
story: (overall story)-2 (subplots)-3
pros: Unique character design and cool animation (both
of which get better as the series goes on), as well as
interesting RPG like subplots and adventures that can
pull ya in
cons: the american version is the con out of the whole
series
rating based on both versions... 3/5
