CONSTITUTION

ARTICLE 1

MEMBERSHIP

To become a member of the AFRICAN LEGACY club you have to feel comfortable with the aims previously stated in the constitution. One should also be able to respect the rules. It is important that you keep in mind that before you sign up, you will be an active member (participate in activities) in the club.

An active member is one that will participate and provide help during activities. An active member should also be present at most, if not all of the meetings.

The general club rules are the following:

1.To use the telephone you have to be an active member.

2.You can stay no longer than 2 minutes on the telephone.

3.No personal external phone calls are permitted

4.Respect the club’s space and the furniture.
 
 

ARTICLE 2

OFFICERS

Both activity committee and public relations officers that are taking part in the club are to be elected by the members and they will have to assume their responsibilities for a full academic year.

ELECTIONS

Any member that wishes to be part of the Executive Committee has to follow the method of nomination. One should be nominated by a person and seconded by another. For one to be elected in a position we need to count the majority of vote (50% + 1 of active members)

If one needs or requires more information about the election process one can always address themselves to the Student Affairs or your student government council.

The executives reserve the right to terminate one’s membership if one misses more than 3 meetings during each semester. The executive also has the right to terminate a membership if there is repeated disrupted behavior. When and if there is a termination of a membership, one must apologize in form of a letter or a verbal apology to the executives and the rest of the club members.

ARTICLE 3

Any student attending Dawson College (no matter your age, sex, race or religion) are more than welcome to be part of this association as long as you can respect the club’s rules and can subscribe to the aims of the constitution.

ARTICLE 4

The executive committee of the African Legacy consists of students of Dawson College. The ratified decision of these Executives will be final and will be representative of the student body. The Executive will last the duration of one school year.

An executive member should have a valid reason for missing a meeting (sick, work, exams). If an executive member misses a meeting, he/she should update themselves completely on all the subjects discussed at the meeting.

A new executive will be elected in April.

The executive committee will consist of the following

The President: Responsible for the calling the meetings and organizing them. Providing leadership to the members of the Student Association.

The Vice President: Acts as the right hand of the president, he or she should assume the president’s duties in case of one’s absence. The vice president’s duties are also to coordinate activities and special events through out the year.

Treasurer: Responsible for all financial accounts, a monthly report of the accounts to the membership.

Secretary: Responsible for the maintenance of all records and taking of minutes.

Public Relations Officer: Responsible for the publication of meetings and all events as well as the creation of awareness of the association within the college.

Activity Committee: Organize musical, cultural and political seminars. Put into effect student’s proposals. Responsible for organizing dances, showing movies, external and internal reports of events. The committee is to implement programs for the membership as well as get other people to work towards various projects.
 
 

ARTICLE 5

Direction and Operation.

All of the members attending a general meeting held by the executives are eligible to vote during an activity proposal. A majority plus one vote (50% + 1) will therefore represent an official representation of the club members.

All ideas, suggestions, demands and activities concerning the well being of The African Legacy members must originate from the student body when presented at a general meeting or delivered in writing to any representative of the executive.

There will be specific times set for all general and executive meetings (weekly) as determined by the executives.

No unregistered student or member of the external community not registered in classes at Dawson College and no administrative staff can vote on a proposal or the decision of the African Legacy members.

All suggestions, ideas, demands, and activities in the form of a proposal written or verbal must receive due attention by persons responsible on he executives.

The membership of the association must meet within the first three weeks of each semester to determine the activities.

ARTICLE 6

For this constitution to be valid, it has to be amended by 2/3 of the membership.
