Iranian History Professor Sentenced

TEHRAN, Iran -- A prominent history professor twice condemned to death on blasphemy charges has been sentenced to three years in jail for insulting Islamic sacred beliefs, the judge in charge of the case said Tuesday. The defendant's lawyer said he would appeal.
Hashem Aghajari, a professor at Tehran's Teachers Training University, had his death sentence overturned twice before the charges were reduced in a third trial earlier this month.

Iran rejects Canadian observers for Kazemi trial
Iran rejected on Wednesday a request by Canada to allow its observers to attend the trial of an Iranian intelligence agent charged with the "semi-intentional murder" of a Canadian journalist.
The death a year ago of Zahra Kazemi, 54, a Canadian photographer of Iranian descent, after she was arrested for taking pictures outside Tehran's Evin prison has soured ties between Iran and Canada.

Indon gunmen attack church, kill minister
JAKARTA - Unidentified gunmen burst into a Christian church in central Indonesia and opened fire, killing the female minister and wounding four worshippers, police said on Monday.
The killing on Sunday evening took place in Palu, central Sulawesi province, which has been hit by sporadic violence between Muslims and Christians since 2001. At least 1,000 people have been killed

Three Men Sneaking Into Israel Killed
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - Jordanian border authorities shot and killed three armed men and detained a fourth Monday as they tried to sneak through the frontier into Israel, a government spokeswoman said.
Police were investigating the early morning incident in Waqas, a small village near the Jordan River that is 40 miles north of the Jordanian capital.

IRAN : POLICE ARREST CHRISTIAN PASTOR
May 26 (Compass) -- Iranian police arrested a Protestant Christian pastor in northern Iran three days ago, jailing him along with his wife and two teenage children.
Pastor Khosroo Yusefi and his wife Nasrin were arrested on May 23 in Chalous, a town along the Caspian Sea coast in Mazanderan province. Together with their 18-year-old son and a daughter age 15, they remain imprisoned without known charges.

GAZA, July 18 (Reuters) - A gun battle erupted on Sunday between Palestinian militants and forces loyal to Gaza's new security commander Moussa Arafat in a new flareup of violence among Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Witnesses said gunmen from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades opened fire at a military intelligence headquarters in the southern Gaza town of Rafah during a march protesting Arafat's appointment of his cousin to the position of Gaza's security chief.
