TAAATS

(The Australian Advanced Air Traffic System)

AHSA member George Palmer being briefed about TAAATS' capabilities by flight data coordinator Megan Bartlett

TAAATS is the restructuring of the Australian Air Traffic Control into two centres, Brisbane and Melbourne. Between them these two control centres handle all air traffic over 11% of the world's surface extending from 2° below the equator to the South Pole and from the mid point of the Indian Ocean to where it meets the New Zealand Control Region (midway across the Tasman Sea)

As well as these two centres which handle enroute traffic there are 29 control towers which handle aircraft at the local level in capital cities and large regional areas eg. Coolangatta, Townsville etc.

During July we were fortunate to visit the Brisbane control centre where the functions and capabilities were demonstrated and explained.

We thank Megan Bartlett and Robert Wilson from AirServices Australia for the opportunity to visit this state of the art centre and George Palmer for his organisation of this event.
