Lube-less Chrony Test.

Some air gunners state that air guns work better with out lubes.  So I decided to do some testing of own with a Chrony.

Here are the results I got.

I used a "Industry" B-3-1, .22 cal. with Crosman pellets. These are the speeds the B-3-1 was giving with a "Slick 50" treatment before breaking it down and cleaning it. This B-3-1 has a syn. piston seal and has about 100 shots on her.

Before cleaning, with a "Slick 50" treatment.
fps:
433.1
416.9

I took the air gun apart and checked the piston's seal and main spring and found them to be in good condition, they were clean, no black mess, only brown oil. There does seem to be a slight  dis-alignment in the breech's barrel's cone that goes in the breech's seal. I later checked and detected no air pressure escapes from the breech. I took the pressure chamber, main spring, the piston and it's seal and clean them with a degreaser, rinsed well with water. I dried them very well with a lint free cloth and set them to dry out completely in the wind. After insuring the parts were completely dry I put the air gun back together with out any lube or oil what so ever.

Lube less shooting the B-3-1, no oil, no moly, no "S-50".

296.9
325.1
321.2
326.2
334.7
I then placed some "Slick 50" on the main spring and behind the piston seal inside the chamber, turned it over to let the "S-50" enter the inside the chamber behind the piston's seal for 10 minutes.
fps:
349.2
342.3
I then sprayed the main spring with Slick 50 Lube.
fps:
369.1
360.8
376.4
The Slick 50 Lube started to enter the chamber, cutting this test short, causing a spray every time I shot that caused my Chrony to give errors. Slick 50 Lube is a spray can product and is too thin and penetrates thru the sides of the piston's seal.

I put in the chamber 4 drops of "Slick 50 Advance formula. I shot off the mixture of "Slick 50 Lube" and "Slick Advance formula" with 6 shots and then I place 3 drops of "Slick 50 Advance formula" in the pressure chamber again and shot off 3 rounds until the spray was gone.
fps:
369.3
379.8
383.6
386.5
397.6
404.6
401.3
400.7
395.7
400.2

I have lost 16 to 33 fps in the test, this could be due to the lube-less shooting of the air gun, it must have worn down the piston's seal a little.

From this testing I have gathered that syn. seals need some lube, be it oil, S-50 or moly, using these syn. seals with out any lube at all will cause fast wear and will cause lost of power. Piston seal replacement will have to done often. This is why all spring piston air guns come with lube in their pressure chambers, to help avoid fast wear of the piston's seal.

I also found that the B-3-1 in .22 cal. can not compare with the B-4-2 in .22 cal., the B-4-2 beats the B-3-1 by a long run.  The B-4-2 in .22 cal. gave me 650 fps, that is 250 fps more than the B-3-1.

Sincerely,
Eddie
