ALEX FRANCESCO GIMBOLO A PROFILE OF
THE ARTIST
PAINTING STYLE AND PHILOSOPHY
Vivid, passionate and unique, Gimbolo paintings embody the luminous color concepts of French Impressionism with
the sublime spirituality and joyful abandon of the early abstractionist masters. Nevertheless, the underlining structure for
Gimbolo remains the ideals of the old masters of classical art, especially that of Leonardo da Vinci. To produce works of art that are unique and personal creations, Gimbolo applies pure
oil paint on canvas from special Italian painting knives to insure the colors remain vibrant and undiluted. Aside from his
materials and painting methods, the artist works in a Zen like meditative state evoking his inner self to create art that
vibrates as an expression of inspired beauty in a continuously evolving form of contemplative abstraction. Although he is
a wonderfully distinctive and individualistic artist, Gimbolo finds an eclectic range of inspiration from the Old
Masters of the Renaissance, from Leonardo da Vinci, and the great Zen Master painters of Japan, to the Impressionists and
early abstract masters Kandinsky, Picasso, and Frankenthaler.
METHODS, MATERIALS, AND SUBJECT MATTER
While the working methods of Gimbolo skillfully employ the vibrant palette and color theories of French Impressionism,
their application aspires for the refined effects of the Old Masters. Gimbolo uses special painting knives to apply pure
oil paint on canvas, which enables him to sculpt colors that remain vibrant and undiluted. Gimbolo paintings are unique and express
a continuously evolving form of contemplative and lyrical Abstract art.
Gimbolo, an abstract artist of contemplative and lyrical oil
paintings, was born a fourth generation Italian in Portland, Oregon, on March 29, 1956 and is now 48 years old. The artist is
deeply respectful of his Italian heritage and its amazing artistic history of great masters. Gimbolo recalls that at a very
early age, his grandfather taught him extensively about Leonardo Da Vinci and the Renaissance masters of art. The young
boy had already begun suffering from a degenerative spinal condition causing increasing and constant pain despite surgeries
and therapy. When treatment began, Gimbolo was 12 years old and particularly remembers how his mother instructed him to
paint and draw as a positive and therapeutic outlet for her son as she worked side by side with him. In his youth, Gimbolo also learned much of the basic techniques of painting as the student of Richard Grove, a well-known
regional artist in Jackson County, Oregon. By the age of 13, he painted his first oil paintings independently while
continuing to study from regional artists and art classes all the way through high school. To honor the expectations of his
father, he attended the University of S.C. as a law student. However, his doctors
eventually insisted he either accept lower grades rather than driving himself to remain at the top-level of his class or consider
alternate vocational opportunities. The idea of continuing to work at something he could not excel at seemed unacceptable
to him. It was then that he felt persuaded to return to the arts as a profession that would allow him to work at home, maintain
a flexible schedule, and even be a therapeutic outlet. In 1982, he diligently
devoted himself to the study of painting to become a professional artist and practiced his skills daily. By 1991, Gimbolo
had his first one man show as a full time professional artist in a small gallery.
Above all, art has always been
not only the vocational love and passion of Gimbolo but also even, a spiritual calling.
He firmly believes that artists have the ability to communicate, that which is truly sublime and perhaps verbally
inexpressible except through the mystical and creative medium of abstract art.
After living and traveling abroad for many years, Gimbolo returned to his hometown of Portland, Oregon. Inspired by
the abundant natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, he began painting vivid abstractions equally diverse in beauty and depth
of expression. In Portland, Oregon, the artist earned regional, national, and finally international recognition with his inclusion
in the most prestigious biographical reference books as Who’s Who in American Art, and Who’s Who in the World.
Unfortunately, on his birthday, March
29th 2001 Gimbolo, who had been suffering increasing pain and fatigue, was hospitalized. Tests found him to be
in advanced stages of Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia. While struggling through chemotherapy and to attain a remission,
the stress was made nearly overwhelming with the loss of his wife after 17 years of faithful marriage. Alone now, a period
of financial setbacks and great difficulties followed which he endured by focusing even more on developing his unique and
personal artistic creations. For the last four years, the artist has been in remission and has been working with resolve to
rebuild and stabilize his life. In 2004, he relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan
until emotionally able to return to Oregon despite all the memories of happiness and such loss. Despite continued pain, Alex
Francesco currently remains in remission and continues his passion for art despite the difficult sales market condition
of the present economy.
New international gallery
representations and a high tech company, Digital Age Expressions, which uses plasma flat screens to display art in high-end
locations present exciting fresh possibilities for the artist. Recently, Gimbolo has begun to receive increasing recognition
following two exhibits in the London area. The artist is also delighted that his art may now continue to gain recognition
in Europe from his new representation with the Janinebean Gallery, in Berlin, Germany. Most recently, Alex Francesco won the
nomination for the Art TV Awards program, in the category open to all artist oil painters in America! Additionally, a dvd
movie bio about the artist was featured during the 2005 New York Art Expo.
PRODUTIVITY AND PRICE
The average
annual production for the art of Gimbolo, is about twenty oil paintings per year with typical canvas sizes from 20" x
24", 24" x 30", 30” x 30”, 30" x 40", to 60" x 40" or larger sometimes. Current sales prices for original oil paintings directly from the artist (galleries or art dealer
retail prices can vary and occasionally be higher) range from about $1,000 - $10,000 each, depending on size and
the personal emotional significance the work has for the artist.
AVAILABILITY OF PAINTINGS
Gimbolo
attempts to adhere to an old world idealistic concept that each of his paintings should be unique and singular works
of art without similar images abounding. Consequently, the collector will not find any similar images, reproductions, or prints
produced by the artistic abilities of the original artist.

In the winter of 2003, Gimbolo gained much more international exposure with two recent gallery exhibits in London,
England. Although the art market is said to remain in a very difficult and slow market condition, the shows in Oct. through
Dec. 31st, generated increasingly enthusiastic interest among the international art world. More recently, the artist was offered representation by a gallery in Berlin, Germany. Gimbolo was happy
to accept their offer since it may lead to more extensive exposure and sales in Europe.
In Nov. 04 the artist was invited to submit some of his recent paintings
to the first national Art TV Awards in Las Vegas in Oct. 2005. The format will be like the academy awards for actors, a red
carpet event with nominations and awards presented by celebrities. Out of thousands who submitted art, Gimbolo is honored
to be one of the very few to have one of his paintings on view at the national website for the Art TV Awards. It certainly
is time that artists receive recognition for the art they contribute to civilization, and hopfully this event will finally after
3 years of delays, attain the funding to become a reality this year.
