Cetara
has beauties both natural and monumental. Pretty and relaxing walks
from Contrada Casale that climbs the ridge of monte Falerzio, towards
the Contrada Grotto , or the fresh spring
"Riggiulella"; interesting the Moorish ruins under the Church
of Santa Maria del Popolo, called
"of Constantinople" in the contrada Valle; the Parish Church
of S. Pietro.
Romanesque except for the octagonal bell-tower, but entirely rebuilt
in the XVIII century, inside: the tomb of the heroic Cetarese
Grandonetto Aulisio( who in 1485 , with a head long flight escaped the Conspirancy of
the Barons ) and the beautiful Statue of San Pietro; the
festa on
the 29th of June with a fantastic choreography of lights, the
prettiest to be seen and a very interesting naval procession;
also in
an alley- way marked only by a ceramic plaque the birth place of the
Beata Suor Orsola Benincasa, founder of the order of the Suore Teatine
dell'Immacolata Concezione; we find the divine , in a fresco in the church
of S.Francesco ( 1585) in the act of sending a tidal wave against
the Saracen fleet who are attacking Cetara . Inside the Temple (in the
cupola ) frescoes of other scenes of the miracle by minor artists and
in the zone of the apsis , a discreet " Deposizione"
by Benincasa dated 1546...
Guarding the town , the majestic Vicereale Tower , erected to
oppose the pirates , by Don Parafan De Ribeira at the end of the XVI
century.
