Bonny Portmore

We lay our scene in the lush green and rolling hills of the highlands of Scotland. The land rolls gently against the crystal skies and there is a moor not to far away where there is a great big single oak tree along the cliff’s edge. It is here that we see a wee lad with chestnut brown hair and these huge puppy eyes that seem to be filled with hope and wonder. We see him sitting very close to a very kind a gentle woman who can only be his mother. She is reading him his very favorite children’s tale, “Alice in Wonderland”. You can tell that it is his favorite because there are marks on it that only a child could place on there. He looks at his mother with such fondness at the age of nine. All of a sudden you see his father coming up behind them with a baby girl in his arms and he too sits down and listens to the tale of Alice and the Rabbit.  So sets the first verse of Bonny Portmore.

Bonny Portmore, you shine where you stand
And the more I think on you the more I think long
If I had you now as I had once before
All the Lords in Old England would not purchase
Portmore.

We now lay our scene a year later from the first. It is the same tree and the same cliffs and moor.  We see the young lad standing there in his best Sunday clothes and he looks terribly upset. He looks down at the crashing waves below him and he can’t seem to grasp what has happened. There was a big loose in his family. His father had died of cancer and the poor lad is now left to be the man of the house at age ten. It is a trying time for him as he grieves. His kind hearted mother comes up from behind him carrying the now toddler little girl who was a wee infant in the other. She puts one hand on the lad’s shoulders and you see him shrug her off and run away. She watches after him with sadness in her eyes.

O Bonny Portmore, I am sorry to see
Such a woeful destruction of your ornament tree
For it stood on your shore for many's the long day
Till the long boats from Antrim came to float it away.

We now lay our scene seven years later at the same tree and moor and there is a strapping young lad there. He is strong and able and very handsome. He still has his soft features and his chestnut hair and brown eyes. He is seventeen years old and he is kicking around a soccer ball. We see another strapping seventeen-year-old boy come up to our lad. He has dark blond curly hair and great green eyes. He joins in a round of practicing with the soccer ball. All of a sudden you can see his now fifteen year sister who was only an infant the last time we saw her come up to them. She blushes and giggles when the blond lad flirts with her and brushes her hair tendril behind her ear. Our lad just smiles at the two of them and is pleasantly surprised when his sweetheart comes up to them. She is a very beautiful blond haired girl that kisses our lad on the cheek in which he blushes and thinks one day…he will marry this bonnie lass.

O Bonny Portmore, you shine where you stand
And the more I think on you the more I think long
If I had you now as I had once before
All the Lords in Old England would not purchase
Portmore.

We now lay our scene one year later at the tree and moor and there is our lad’s mother there quite sad and crying on the shoulder of the blond male friend of before. He has now a beard and he looks dashingly distinguished. Behind him is the distressed blond girlfriend of our lad and the lad’s sister. There is something new here at this moor and by this tree. They are all looking down at a new gravestone that was placed there. Our lad had died in a car accident and the family and friends are grieving the loss of their beloved. The blond girlfriend of our lad comes forward to the gravestone and touches it softly with her fingers and leaves a red flower on the stone and then leaves. The Sister is next as she takes off her locket that had the both of them in it and slips it on the cross like stone. The blond lad stands there as the mother just crumbles in front of the stone and weeps for her son

All the birds in the forest they bitterly weep
Saying "where will we shelter or where will we sleep?"
For the Oak and the Ash they are all cutten down
And the walls of Bonny Portmore are all down to the ground.

We now lay our scene a year after the death of our lad still at that tree. But alas…there is our lad looking at his own gravestone and making an uffish face, as he is not sure what has happened. He is what the world calls an immortal and yet he doesn’t know that. To him, he thinks that he is an abomination and the devil himself. He is scared and utterly alone. He can’t even imagine what this world is around him. He is crying trying to figure all of this out with his legs pressed into him. Suddenly there is a fellow that comes up behind him and our lad looks at him with wonder as if he is feeling something for the first time. The fellow in the long black trench coat looks down at him and smirks at the boy and puts his steady hand on the lads shoulder to follow him. The lad does so and they go off together to talk about what he is and the world around him.

O Bonny Portmore, you shine where you stand
And the more I think on you the more I think long
If I had you now as I had once before
All the Lords in Old England would not purchase
Portmore.

We now lay our scene a year after that at that same tree and moor. There is our lad again looking at his gravestone and looking out into the see. He looks sad because he just lost his mother. He is afraid that he was a disappointment to her. He wonders if she will ever know how much he loved her. He wonders if it was a good idea to tell the blond friend of his and his mother before she died that he was an immortal. He sighs softly to himself as he stands there contemplating where his life is going. Suddenly there is another fellow that come out from behind him. He has such a warm and inviting face. His eyes are deep blue and he has raven dark hair. He smiles at our lad and takes his hand in his and kisses it and then his cheek. Our lad for the first time in his life…feels safe.
