alone together - Lyrics Act I

No, don't look at me
Please. Not just yet
Why am I here?
This is crazy.

No, don't look at me
Do something new
And they wait for you to fail.

Sing something then,
Anything.

Oh, just look at me
Scared. On my own
Still singing songs
But it's lonely
Isnt it awful?
God how depressing
Me standing here
And you there assessing
I'm so glad I came

Don't Look at Me, by Stephen Sondheim from Follies

Whenever I feel afraid I hold my head erect
And whistle a happy tune

Anyone can whistle
That's what they say
Easy
Anyone can whistle any old day
Easy
It's oh so simple.
Relax. Let go, let fly.
Will someone tell me why can't I?

Whistle at a dragon, down it will fall
Easy
Whistle at a hero, trumpets and all
Easy
What's hard is simple
What's natural comes hard
Maybe you can show me how to let go
Lower my guard
Learn to be free

 When you feel in trouble
And you don't know right from wrong
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle

When you feel temptation
And the urge is very strong
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle

Not just a little squeak
Pucker up and blow.
And if your whistle's weak yell
Jiminy Cricket

Take the straight and narrow path
And if you start to slide
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle
And always let your conscience be your guide

When you feel in trouble
And you don't know right from wrong
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle

When you feel temptation
And the urge is very strong
Give a little whistle
Give a little whistle

Not just a little squeak
Pucker up and blow
And if your whistle's weak

Sing, sing, so
Please look at me now
Here on stage
This is my world
Its outrageous
Call for the hook
Tonight I can duck it
This is terrific.
Scary but fuck it.
I'm so glad I came
reprise of No, Don't Look at Me

Sometimes you think you've lived before
All that you've lived today
Things you do come back to you
As if they knew the way
Oh the tricks the mind can play

It seems we stood and talked like this before
We looked at each other the same way then
But I can't remember where or when

The clothes I'm wearing
Are the clothes I wore
The smile I am smiling
I was smiling then
But I can't remember where or when

Some things that happen for the first time
Seem to be happening again
And so it seems that we have lived before
And laughed before and loved before
But who knows where or when

Some things that happen for the first time
Seem to be happening again
And so it seems that we have lived before
And laughed before and loved before
But who knows where or when

I've been thinking about what I want to share with you this evening. I want to take a journey, a journey through a life. A life that's complex, varied, intriguing as the words and music that surround it. I'm sure that the paths that I'll tread have been well-worn by many others.

Blue, songs are like tattoos
You know I've been to sea before
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away
Hey Blue, here is a song for you
Ink on a pin
Underneath the skin
An empty space to fill in
Well there're so many sinking now
You've got to keep thinking
You can make it thru these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs, lots of laughs
Everybody's saying that hell's the hippest way to go
Well I don't think so
But I'm gonna take a look around it though
Blue, I love you
Blue, there is a shell for you
Inside you'll hear a sigh
A foggy lullaby
There is your song from me
Blue, by Joni Mitchell

It steals to you softly at night
And echoes around in your brain
So seemingly sweet and polite
A tender and placid refrain
Seductive, delicious it haunts you
You'll  melt as the melody flows
Repeated, insistent it taunts you
As time and again round it goes
Round it goes
Always it goes

Padam Padam Padam
It's the voice of the act you regret
Padam Padam Padam
You may try but you'll never forget
Padam Padam Padam
In your heart feel it gouging a hole
As it sings of your guilt
And the lies you've built
This tune, the song of your soul

It drags up the love that you spurned
It dredges up memories you hate
You wear them like chains justly earned
You stagger and reel from the weight
You stumble for ways to defeat it
You strain to restore your repose
But still in your sleep you'll repeat it
As time and again round it goes
Round it goes
Always it goes

Padam Padam Padam
It's the echo of conscience ignored
Padam Padam Padam
It exposes the fake and the fraud
Padam Padam Padam
All your fears feed it's fires like coal
And it shouts of your shame
And it calls your name
This tune, the song of your soul.
Oh and it's laughing at all of your pain
And it knows that you wrote the refrain.
So when Destiny's bells start to toll
You'll admit that you lost and you paid the cost
Cry out the song of my soul
Padam!

Son of the thief
Son of the saint
Who is the child
Without complaint
Son of the brave
Son unknown
This is a child like your own
The same sweet smile
The same sad tears
The cry at night
The nightmare tears
Son of the great
Or son unknown
This is a child like your own

So long ago
Long long ago

Little Pal
When Daddy goes away
Promise you'll be good
From day to day
Do as Mummy says
And never sin
Be the man your Daddy might have been
Daddy didn't have an easy start
So here is the wish that's in my heart
I want you to be
Little Pal
What I might have been
Little Pal
I want you to laugh and to sing and to play
And be good to Mummy while Daddy's away
I'll pray day and night
Little Pal
That you'll turn out right
Little Pal
So till we meet again
Never knows where or when
Pray for me
Now and then
Little Pal

The night is bitter
The stars have lost their glitter
The wind grows colder
And suddenly you're older
And all because of the man that got away
No more his eager call
The writing's on the wall
The dreams you dreamed have all gone astray
The man that won you
Has run off and undone you
That great beginning has seen a final inning
Don't know what happened. It's all a crazy game
No more that old time thrill
For you've been through the mill
And never a new love will be the same
Good riddance
Goodbye
Every trick of his you're on to
But fools will be fools
And where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher
It's lonelier and tougher
With hope you burn up
Tomorrow he might turn up
There's just no let up
The live long night and day
Ever since this world began
There's nothing sadder than
A one man woman
Looking for the man that got away
Good riddance
Goodbye

If you were the only girl in the world
And I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter
In the world today
We could go on loving
In the same old way
A Garden of Eden
Just made for two
Nothing will  mar our joy
I could say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If I were the only boy in the world
And you...

The moment you wake up
Before you put on your make-up
I'll say a little prayer for you
While combing your hair now
And wondering what dress you'll wear now
I'll say a little prayer for you

Forever and ever you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever we never will part
Oh how I love you
Together forever
That's how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartache for me

I run for the bus dear
While riding I think of us dear
And I say a little prayer for you
At work I just take time
And all through my coffee break time
I say a little prayer for you

Forever and ever you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever we never will part
Oh how I love you
Together forever
That's how it must be
To live without you
Will only be heartache for me

At night when I'm lonely
My thoughts are for you, dear, only
And I say a little prayer for you
The memories that find me
Keep coming back to remind me
To say a little prayer for you

Forever and ever you stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever we never will part
Oh how I loved you
Together forever
That's how it must be
To live without you
Only means heartache for me

So darling believe me
For me there is no one but you

Mother, you left me I never left you
I needed you but you didn't want me
So I, I just got to tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Father, you had me but I never had you
I wanted you but you didn't want me
So I, I just have to tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Mother, Father, look what you've done
I couldn't walk but I tried to run
So I, I just got to tell you
Goodbye, Goodbye

I've got no strings to hold me down
To make me fret, to make me frown
I had strings but now I'm free
There are no strings on me
I've got no strings so I have fun
I'm not tied to anyone
How I love my liberty
There are no strings on me
Hi Ho the merry-o
I'm as happy as can be
And I want the world to know
Nothing ever worries me

I'll build a stairway to Paradise
Wth a new step everyday
I'm gonna get there at any price
Stand aside I'm on my way
I've got the blues
And up above is so fair
Shoes go on and carry me there
I'll build a stairway to Paradise
With a new step everyday

It's madness to be always sitting around in sadness
When you could be looking the steps of gladness
You'll be happy when you can do
Oh just six or seven
Begin today
You'll find it nice
The quickest way to Paradise
When you practice
Here's the thing to do
Simply say as you go
That I'll build a stairway to Paradise
With a new step everyday
And I'm gonna get there at any price
Stand aside I'm on my way
I got the blues
And up above is so fair
Shoes come on and carry me there
I'll build a stairway to Paradise
With a new step everyday

Happy talk keep talkin' Happy talk
Talk about thing you'd like to do
You've got to have a dream
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have
A dream come true?

Talk about the moon
Floating in the sky
Looking like a lily on a lake
Talk about a bird
Learning how to fly
Making all the music he can make

Happy talk keep talkin' happy talk
Talk about things you'd like to do
You've got to have a dream
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have
A dream come true?

Talk about a star
Looking like a toy
Peeking through the branches of a tree
Talk about a girl
Talk about a boy
Counting all the ripples in the sea

Happy talk keep talkin' happy talk
Talk about things you'd like to do
You've got to have a dream
If you don't have a dream
How you gonna have
A dream come true?

If you don't talk happy
And you haven't got a dream
Then you'll never have
a dream come true

The best of times is now
What's left of summer but a faded rose
The best of times is now
As for tomorrow
Well...
So hold this moment fast
And live and love as hard as you know how
And make this moment last
Because the best of times is now, is now, is now

Now, not some forgotten yesterday
Now, tomorrow is too far away
So hold this moment fast
And live and love as hard as you know how
And make this moment last
Because the best of times is now, is now, is now

Now, not some forgotten yesterday
Now, tomorrow is too far away
So hold this moment fast
And live and love as hard as you know how
And make this moment last
Because the best of times is now, is now, is now, is now, is now, is now, is now

I remember when I was a very little boy our house burned down.  I'll never forget the look on my mother's face as she gathered me up in her arms and carried me through the burning building out on to the pavement.  I stood there shivering in my pajamas and watched my whole world go up in flames.  And then I said to myself "Is that all there is to a fire?"

Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is, my friends
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze
And have a ball
If that's all there is

And years later when I was 12 years old my mother took me to the circus.  The greatest show on earth - clowns, elephants, dancing bears and a beautiful lady in pink tights who flew high above our heads.  As I sat there watching this marvelous spectacle, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing. I didn't know what it was but when it was over I said to myself "Is that all there is to the circus?"

Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is, my friends
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze
And have a ball
If that's all there is

I fell in love. Head over heels in love with this wonderful person in the world. We used to take long walks along the side of the river. Sit for hours gazing into each other's eyes.  So very much in love. And then one day my love went away. I thought I would die, and when I didn't, when I didn't, I said to myself "Is that all there is to love?"

Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is, my friends
Then let's keep....

Oh, I know what your're thinking to yourself.  If that's the way he feels about it, why doesn't he end it all right now.
But no, not me.  I'm not ready for the final disappointment.  Because I know, as sure as I'm standing here talking to you, that when the final moment comes, when I'm breathing my last breath I'll be saying to myself "Is that all there is?"

Is that all there is?
Is that all there is?
If that's all there is my friends
Then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze
And have a ball
If that's all there is

The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk
Are secretly unhappy men because
The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk
Get paid for what they do, but no applause
They'd gladly bid their dreary jobs goodbye
For anything theatrical
And why?

There's no business like showbusiness
Like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow
Nowhere can you get that happy feeling
When you are stealing that extra bow

There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low
Even with a turkey that you know will fold
You may be stranded out in the cold
Still you wouldn't change it for a sack of gold
Let's go on with the show

The costumes, the scenery, the make-up, the props
The audience that lifts you when you're down
The headaches, the heartaches the backaches, the flops
The sheriff who escorts you out of town
Oh, the opening when your heart beats like a drum
The closing when the customers don't come

There's no business like showbusiness
Like no business I know
You get word before the show has started
That you're ailing mother died at dawn
Top of that your wife and you just parted
Oh you're broken hearted but you go on

There's no business like showbusiness
Like no business I know
Travelling through the country will be thrilling
Standing out in front on opening night
Smiling as you see the theatre filling
There's your billing up there in lights

There's no people like show people
We smile when we are low
Yesterday they told you you would not go far
That night you open and there you are
Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star
Let's go on with the show
