The question as to whether photography is entitled to be considered one of the fine arts is, to my mind, a foolish one.

 

But if it were asked whether photography might be utilized as a medium of artistic expression, I would most unhesitatingly reply in the affirmative.

 

It might be discussed whether sculpture, or painting, or architecture offered the widest scope for the expression of abstract beauty.

It would be admitted by all, that each of these arts is peculiarly adapted for the expression of some particular aesthetic quality.

 

Following this line of argument, I hope to be able to prove that photography is capable of expressing certain aesthetic emotions very completely.

Le  “ Pictorialisme “ , cet enfant incertain de la philosophie, porté aux nues par une mode, s’est vu par la suivante, relégué dans l’ombre, sinon dans le mépris.

Voici qu’il réapparait, débarrassé des préjugés, épuré par le temps, qui, calmant les passions, lui rend la place qui lui revient: celle d’une tendance parmi d’autres, et qui, comme les autres, fut servie par des bons et de moins bons adeptes.

Fotografie is geen kunst op zichzelf . Het is enkel en alleen een  “  MEDIUM “, een middel,

zoals olieverf of pastel, om kunst te maken.

Fotografie deelt haar creativiteit met de kunst, want vanuit haar eigen  natuur  is haar voorstelling noodzakelijk verbonden met de verbeelding.

Elke foto vertegenwoordigt het samengaan van de ervaring en het innerlijke beeldproces.

Of we het ons realiseren of niet: camera en fotograaf veranderen de werkelijkheid en interpreteren de wereld rondom ons.
