HOWTO disable/enable AutoRun CD-Rom under NT 4.0

Did you ever got annoied be AutoRun CD-ROMs in your NT system. Every time you insert a CD some Progrms or the webbrowser will start. This is very distracting if you don't want it to work away and make CDs slower then they are anyway. If you have a CD-ROM Jukbox you are also better off without AutoRun.
This article describes how to disable the Autorun feature in Windows NT version 4.0.

There is no user interface option to enable or disable the Autorun feature. To enable or disable the feature, you must edit the registry. To do so, follow the steps below.

WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. I can not guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of the Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

  1. Run regedt32 and change the Autorun value in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom To disable the Autorun feature, change the Autorun value to 0. To enable the Autorun feature, change the Autorun value to 1.
  2. Restart the computer.
NOTE: The above method disables the Autorun feature completely. If you want to disable the feature on a per compact disc basis, you can hold down one of the SHIFT keys while inserting the compact disc. utility.
