(continued) His first wife died giving birth to Martha on Nov 22, 1880. He then married a widow with 3 children. According
to family history, Lula Jane had mental problems and the family had a hard time of it.
LOUISA: According to cousin Geneva Culwell,
Lula Jane was a "mental case". Genevea remembers her mother telling how Lula would make the children chew any soil
out of their panties. She beat Geneva's mother until she had to be bandaged for pointing in the wrong direction when her
sisters asked where Daddy had gone. She was only a baby, and didn't know. (family legend)
Another story was that she was going to poison them all at one time. She told her two children not to eat. Lula ran
in (young Lula) and grabbed their plates off the table and yelled at them not to eat. (Again, family legend)
Geneva thinks that Andrew was a "ginner" (cotton) and was away from home a lot, and din't know what went on.
Another story says that Andrew was ill and had to be away a lot, leaving Lula with 10 children (small children, at that)
to care for. No wonder she "flipped", if legend is true. All of the children were under age 10 at one time.
The original marriage license is in the possession of H. Anne Whiteman, writer of this information.

Etta McCown was said to adore her dad. Family tradition says he was a minister. Etta was a Methodist, as were her
siblings.
Although we do not know a great deal about Etta before she appears as a married woman, a family picture taken with her
sisters show her to be very attractive. In her wedding picture with Thomas Rundell, she looks rather stern, but that could
have just been the photographer's work.
It is said that she had only one love in her life, William Morris. Family talk said that she married Thomas Rundell to
provide a father for her little daughter. We have no way of verifying this, but in later years they occupied
the same home in Little Rock, but not the same rooms. She had her bedroom and the Living room, and he had his bedroom.
Who knows what lead to those living arrangments?
When William died in a most terrible way (the doctor supposedly poured boiling water into his abdominal cavity during
an apendicitis operation on the kitchen table), Etta was left with her small daughter Willie, later called Billie. She became
half-sister to Lillian, Ray and Anna Mae in subsequent years. Papa, as he was called by the children, appears to have been
a stern parent.
We do not know how Etta and Thomas Rundell met, nor for sure where they married. Etta was from Texas, and Thomas lived
in Missouri at least for a while when he was a child. Apparently they met when he worked for the railroad.
Etta remained close to her sisters, but Papa Rundell was not as close with his family, although they did visit occasionally.
Etta was no stranger to tragedy. Her son, Abraham, died at about age 4 of meningitis, and William Raymond's twin died
at birth.
By that time she had changed her middle name to May or Mae. Children at school had teased her, saying "Mariah,
Mariah, your tail's on fire!" Because of that, she disliked her name, and when she was old enough, she changed it!
ACCORDING TO GENEVA CULWELL: "Family legend says that "Aunt Et's" husband, W. E. Morris, died a horrible
death. After that happened, Willie and Aunt Et stayed with Geneva's parents for a while. She told how Morris got appendicitis
and gangrene. Some crazy doctor had men hold him and poured boiling water into the cavity to purge it.. supposedly his idea
of killing the infection..he finished off the patient quicker instead. Geneva's mom said
when Willie was scolded, she would pout and say, "Poor Little Willie, her doesn't has a papa." She was not
very old when Aunt Et remarried."
"Speaking of where Aunt Et remarried, it might have been somewhere around Gainsville or Illinois Bend, Tx., or Love
Co.,, OK, but Brown Co., TX was mentioned a lot by Geneva's mom." ...
Another family member said that she was living with Aunt Cell (Sell?) when she met Papa (Tom Rundell). She may have married
Papa in OK (Maybe Ardmore) if not Texas. Or maybe Tishamingo."
T.A. Rundell: He as a Christian Scientest according to his obit but his family states he was a Baptist.(Per Anna Mae Rundell
Elrod)
Thomas Rundell walked with a limp most of his life. As a youth, perhaps about 7 years old or so, he was sent to live
with an aunt "Mariah?" in Des Arc, MO. He went there with his brother. Possibly they were orphaned. From that
time
forward, he doesn't reappear in family history until his marriage to Etta.
He married a young widow with a little girl. He was a handsome man, tall, with a mustache and brown hair. As time passed
and he and Etta had children of their own, he appears to have become quite stern in his caring for his
children. Willie, his step-daughter, eloped. Then Lillian eloped, and Anna Mae Elizabeth eloped. Each felt they could
not marry with Papa's blessing.
In later years, when they lived at 1302 West Second Street in Little Rock, AR., Thomas and Etta appeared to cohabit the
same home, but not close to one another. While we cannot judge their living habits, Thomas was not allowed in
Etta's rooms. By that time she was somewhat reclusive and invalided, leaving only to visit the doctor or to putter around
the outside of the house. Thomas, who had no pension because railroaders did not get social security, and he had
no railroad pension .. or if he did it was miniscule ... Thomas worked at several odd jobs, in a bank, for the Salvation
Army, and others to make ends meet.
His grandchildren thought him quite fine. They were not allowed in Etta's part of the house, either, but grandpa Rundell
always entertained them with interesting things to do. He had ink eradicator, a very interesting item, and
a grinding wheel, old books, a typewriter, lots of things to look at and enjoy, and he brought home some items from the
Salvation Army as well.
Grandmother Rundell was NEVER called grandma, it was not allowed.

Lillian's Wedding
Lillian Rundell was very nervous. Always intimidated by her father, Thomas Rundell, who ruled his home firmly, she was
now intending to defy him in the most permanent way!
She and the young, handsome Guy Sadler had gone for a drive ... and decided to get married. Lillian was still a schoolgirl.
Papa would never permit it.
Therefore, they formed an elaborate plan. Allendale, the school Lillian attended, had a dinner held on the grounds of
the school each year as an Easter celebration. Etta Rundell, the mother, usually attended with the girls, but Papa Rundell
did not. Papa, to complicate the story, was against Lillian even DATING Guy. The pair decided they would slip away during
the festival and get married.
Lillian, although unable to date Guy, had fallen in love with him. She slipped out with him when she was supposed to
be "staying over" with Guy's sister. Aware they had to get the license from nearby Clarendon, a new problem arose.
The clerk in Clarendon was a friend of Papa. It was decided Guy would make the trip to get the license, and they hoped no
one would contact Papa Rundell. In those days it did not require both parties present to get a license.
The big day dawned and Lillian and Guy slipped away from the Easter dinner. They drove to Cotton Plant, AR., with Guy's
cousin and his wife as witnesses (Lloyd and Betty Whiteside). It was during the time of the big 1927 floods,
but they had no trouble going and everyone was so excited no one noticed the water slowly rising. Back home, it was apparent
Etta knew where the couple had gone, for she was crying at the Easter dinner. Someone asked her what was
the matter and little Anna Mae, her youngest daughter, piped up "Lillian ran away to get married!"
Lillian and Guy were married by a slightly tipsy Justice of the Peace who had been partying the night before. They began
the return to Allendale. Horror of horrors, the bridge was out! Since the wedding was to be kept secret, they had to get
home. The party returned to Cotton Plant, went to the railroad and returned by train. It poured all night on their wedding
night. Later, Papa confronted Lillian when no one else was around and asked her if she was married. She answered, "No,
Papa," and he made her swear she would never see Guy Sadler again.
Unfortunately, Papa either heard from his friend, the clerk, or went to Clarendon, for he found out about the license
... and the wedding. Angry, he ordered Lillian out of the house ... not uncommon for that day and time. She
had nowhere to go because the water was so high. She sent a note to Guy, who came to visit her at the home of a girlfriend
where she had sought refuge. Unfortunately, the girlfriend's father was a friend of Thomas Rundell and HE
ordered her out of his house as well! Guy took his bride to his home, and she went to school daily by boat during the
floods.
Eventually, peace was made between the two families. Lillian and Guy were married 28 years. He died of a heart attack
in the family home, in Lillian's arms. She never remarried. Lillian helped to care for her mother after her
father's death.

HAVE COPY OF DELAYED BIRTH CERTIFICATE FILED 1948 FOR ANNA MAE.
HARVEY:
Harvey was located by his natural sisters when he was 62 years
old. He was adopted out at age 2. SOME FAMILY HISTORY: Harvey Elrod was born Harvey McDaniel. When he was about two years
old his mother died, making him an orphan. He was given at that time to the Elrod family, the only sibling to be given away.
Some went to Aunt and Uncles, some lived together. Harvey resented being given away for much of his adult life.
The story is that Harvey's oldest brother was given the child to care for. He had a sickly wife, and, according to Harvey's
sister, a mean woman. She only lived for 6 or so months after Harvey was given away, someone said. Times
were very hard then, and it was not easy to feed a family. In any case, his brother was only about 18, and his wife younger,
at the time. It was only after Harvey's sister located him that he learned this. He never knew why he
was given to the Elrods, but he had a very hard life growing up and was filled with resentment, especially since he did
not get past the third grade in school. He learned a lot of life lessons, but he always resented not having
an education. He was good at business, having a lot of success early.
He grew up with his step brother Jess, whom he considered his real brother.
Indeed, they look much alike. They were always in trouble, and a couple of
mean little boys for the most part. They would do things like tie a couple of
cat's tails together, toss them over a clothesline, and watch them fight. One
time they were harrassed by neighbor boys, so they lured them to the pig pen
with a trumped-up story, and threw them in. They could have easily been
killed as there was a vicious boar, but all turned out okay.
When Harvey was about 15 years old, he was shot. The only problem was, he
shot himself.
He had a rifle, and braced it barrel down against his foot to load it. The
gun went off and shot a hole in Harvey's foot. The scar eventually faded by
drawing into the foot and then disappearing.
A family member said that Harvey was born at Red House Ranch, near Des Arc.

SOME INTERESTING STORIES AND FACTS RELATED TO TOM WHITEMAN:
A postcard sent from camp by Thomas in May, 1971, read:
Hi Mom! Well, this is my first day at Clear Creek. I barely found time to
write this, but I did! Even though it's only the first day I miss everybody
at home already. Well, that's my time! Boy, this schedule's tight! Your
son, Tom. P.S. please send $1.00.
In 1992 Tom had a major accident in his cement truck while on the job. He
swerved to avoid an animal, the load shifted and he was on a two-lane road,
going off on the left. Fortunately, for him, he had not belted his seat belt
because the driver's side was crushed completely. A motorist came up to the
scene, and timidly asked, is anyone in there? When Tom replied, the motorist
said "Thank God!". And we do. The newspaper account said a Purcell man was
injured shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when his northbound (vehicle) left a
Jaspar County road five miles east of Carthage and slid into a ditch, the
patrol said. Tom Whiteman, 33, was treated for moderate injuries at
McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.
Donna was called, and that phone call must have been frightening. She rushed
to his side at the hospital, but did not know the extent of his injuries until
she got there.
Written 2-11-93 letter from Tom (in file) reflecting on his past, and telling
us that we were wiser than we knew (or than he knew?)
DEC 1993 letter: (portions) It's been an exciting year for us. WE began the
year looking to purchase a house. Easter weekend in April we moved into our
new home. It's two stories, with two bedrooms, living room and utility room
on 1/2 acre in a small, quiet town (population 359). We tried our hand at
gardening this summer - and the weeds won! We did have strawberries, string
beans and tomatoes. We went cherry and blackberry picking and did some
"jamming".
Tom was in an accident while driving a truck at the end of April. The truck
was totaled adnn we consider it a miracle he got out with some pretty minor
breaks, cuts and bruises. In August he returned to work, but found that
strapping and tarping flatbeds really bothered his shoulder. He's now with a
company that still keeps him over-the-road, but they only haul vans.
Keith is growing up so fast. He played T-ball this spring and really liked
it. He went to California for 3 weeks in August and learned to swim in his
grandparents pool. He's in 2nd grade and made the Honor Roll with straight
A's this semester.
Scott is doing well in the Navy. He's been stationed in Maryland this past
year and in January he'll be going to another base, also in Maryland. He'll
be there until January 1995. On November 29th we became parents of a new
daughter ... Scott married a young lady named Kelly! Of course we wish them
much happiness together.
I started working as an aide at Keith's school. The pay isn't so good - Tom
says I'm HIS contribution to society, but I really like working with the kids
and the hours and time off is great.
We especially felt God's hand and blessing upon us in October when the Spring
River flooded and the house we had been renting in Carl Junction had 4 1/2
feet of water inside!
