FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

DAYALBAGH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE

IT'S DE-TD TIME FOLKS

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INSTITUTION

1950 Engineering College, Dayalbagh, Agra, affiliated to the Agra University, Agra.

1981 Faculty of Engineering, Dayalbagh Educational Institute, (Deemed University), Dayalbagh, Agra.

The College was established in 1950 by His Holiness Huzur Mehtaji Maharaj, himself a Civil Engineer of distinction who rose to the post of Chief Engineer, PWD, Punjab, and the Sixth Revered Leader of the Radhasoami Faith. The College was started with Electrical and Mechanical branches with an intake of 60 students. The intake was kept limited with the objective of ensuring a close Student - Teacher Interaction and avoiding the over-crowding of the Laboratories. The College was started to fulfil the demand of well trained and qualified Graduate Engineers for Independent India and is one of the premier Institutions known for its quality education and innovative programmes.

There has been no further addition in the number of branches and the total intake of students per year has remained at 60 inspite of the fact that of late many Institutions have come up. The fact remains that admitting a large number of students and unwieldy expansion only results in falling standards and discipline. The two disciplines have been continuously strengthened with the provision of a broad based degree with some specialisation by way of electives. A large number of electives have been introduced leading to specialisation in the Third and Final Years. In the Electrical Engineering discipline, the students have a choice of selecting electives confirming to the Power Systems, Electronics and Computer streams. In the Mechanical Engineering discipline the students have electives like Production planning and Control, Automobile Engineering, I/C Engines, Futurology, Design etc.

Keeping in line with the latest trends in higher education, Engineering Faculty started an M. Tech. Program in Engineering Systems on part-time basis in 1990 and a full time program in the very next year. Engineering Systems is the latest and emerging potential tool which takes under its ambit all field viz. Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Aeronautics and Production and Industrial Engineering by way of analogies and graph theoretic approach combined with the concept of "across" and "through" variables akin to the Kirchoff’s Current Law and the Kirchoff’s Voltage Law.

The concept of Systems Engineering is so powerful that it integrates the conceptual tools and graph theoretic approach to make the higher education relevant to the society we live in. It takes real world problems like transport planning, Socio-Economic Systems, Energy Management Systems, Environmental Systems etc. and provides solutions to the most burning problems of our country.

Our post-graduate program gives a broad based degree. There are core courses like Applied Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Modelling and Simulation, Instrumentation and Process Control, Computational Techniques etc. which are essential in the present day scenario for any branch. This is followed by electives, Seminars, Minor Projects, Practical hands-on experience sessions and Dissertation leading to a specialisation in various branches of Engineering.

The quality of the program can be determined from the fact that most of the dissertations are resulting in high quality Research Papers or cater to the needs of organisations like ADRDE, Agra. At this juncture, we can proudly claim that our Institute has a leading edge in Systems Engineering and Soft Computing techniques with a large number of students and staff publishing papers at International Level.

The Institute was rated Fourth among the top 5 Engineering Institutes in the country in Career and Competition Times (of The Times of India Group). In pursuance of the stated objectives of providing academically excellent, socially relevant incorporating various innovative features without taking away from the basic needs of the country, a wholesome and affordable education several Administrative and Educational reforms have been carried out at the Institute. There has been continuous development in the infrastructure facilities provided to the students in the form of well stocked Libraries and Book bank and well equipped modern Labs. These developments are landmarks in the growth of Technical Education not only in the state but in the country as well.

In the words of Prof. A. S. Desai, Chairperson, UGC who on her visit to the Institute in March, 1998 remarked "I feel this is really what your whole education system here is trying to achieve in terms of not only academic learning but values and also in terms of action in all three areas, viz. Knowledge, skills and attitudes which is what education is about. ….. In fact some of the things that I planned to say to you, you are already doing. I do not know why I am on the stage at all".

Dr. S. Rame Gowda, Chairman, AICTE in the XV Convocation Address, December, 1996 said "I am pleasantly surprised that you have been put into action something that I have been longing for many years as an Educationist. I could have never imagined that, in a University where Technical Education is imparted, the technical students would be doing manual work giving them the dignity of labour which we mouth only on occasions like this…" .
