Alcatraz and Angel Island Photos

As you most likely already know Alcatraz is the notorious federal prison located on an island in San Francisco Bay. A mere 3 miles from San Francisco, this prison was considered escape proof and housed some of the most dangerous criminals of the 20th century. Prisoners trying to escape were met with the cold, swift waters of San Francisco bay that either killed them by hypothermia or washed them out to the pacific(or both!). In fact only two people were known to have gotten off the rock, if they survived, is still a mystery. The island was closed during the 1960 when it became obsolete. However it has remained federal land since. At one point, an Indian tribe (as is their right) took up residence on the island in a form of protest directed at the government. They were removed after a mysterious fire burnt some of the structures down on the island. My only pictures are from around the bay. I will add photos from the island itself sometime in 2004.

I am including Angel island here out of default because most of my pictures seem to include it anyway. Though I have been on the island numerous times, I have never taken photos there. Or more likely I can't find them. Though a lot can be said about the island in terms of history and nature, I will leave it at that this island was the Ellis Island of the Pacific. Immigrants would debark here for processing and entrance into the United States. I will sometime add to this gallery as well and give Angel Island its own page. Please e-mail any comments to
