NICOLAS ANELKA Nicolas Anelka is, well Nicolas Anelka. An odd character who some consider Xenophobic, Depressed and downright confused has been a gunner since 1997. An odd find by Arsene Wenger anelka was purchased for a measly 250,000 (whilst now the club is being offered 20 million for his services). Anelka had been a fine player at Paris St. Germain and an accomplished u-18 star with the french team scoring 9 goals in 18 matches. Ever since his debut with the reserve team in march of 1997, football analysts across Britain have questioned Nic's errrrrr Sanity, perhaps. His mental state certainly does come into place in his performance. Sometimes he's brilliant, scoring multiple goals and zig-zagging all over the pitch. On other days he's slow, unattentive and confused. Nicolas did play a fine role in the latter part of the 1998 season, however. He took over when Dennis Bergkamp was injured in the FA Cup final and stunned everyone in the stadium with a fabulous performance. Nicolas returned to the arsenal lineup in august 1998 with a clear mind yet he would have a huge gap to fill. With Ian Wright gone, Nicolas Anelka would become the chosen one to fill his spot. Even from the start people all over were questioning the youngster's ability to do so. Everything started off well, good and solid performances assisting the fatigued Dennis Bergkamp but nothing special. Things took a turn for the worse in late October- early November. With the gunners having a tough time in the champions league, Nicolas Anelka seemed to crack, mentally. He blamed the English for being mean to the French, he blamed Arsenal for hanging around in Cliques and most of all he blamed something or other for the reason he had no friends in England. It was pathetic, yes but Anelka finally slipped out of that attitude in early 1999 saying he wanted to stay with arsenal, despite such clubs as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus making offers for him.
