ARTIST'S PAINTINGS-IN-PROGRESS PAGE
40th Birthday Celebration (with my friend, Ryan) - February 19, 2007 <BGSOUND src="file.mid">
"Untitled" - 18"x24"; Acrylic on Paper

Michelangelo said that his sculptures weren't pre-planned. He waited for the piece of marble to "speak to him" in order for the artist to know what was to be released from within. I'm still waiting for this "figure" to speak to me...it took a couple of weeks for her to tell me to put the suspended circle in front of her! Estimation: The painting is about 40% completed :-)

"Emerging from the Cocoon" - 24"x12"; Acrylic on Paper

After I drew the figure, I waited for the piece to "speak to me". After a few weeks of non-communication, I put it aside and worked on some other drawings and paintingss. When I started putting colors on a new painting, I decided to use the same ones for this work - hoping that the picture would "speak to me" this time...and it did. It told me that figure was either waking up or being born...uncoiling herself from a smaller position. Soon afterward, I decided on the "butterfly" theme...the background, then, worked itself out. Estimation: The painting is about 90% completed :-)

"Beautiful" - 18"x24"; Acrylic on Paper

This commissioned painting is being made for a woman of two cultures - Thai and African-American. She wanted a painting that spoke to both sides of her. So, I started with an afroed Black woman using the "Black Power Fist" symbol (a la Tommie Smith from the 1968 Mexico Olympics). Next, I included the silhouetted countries of Thailand (on the left) and Africa (on the right). Then, I put the Thai symbol for "Beautiful" within the country-shapes. Last, I placed stylized elephants at the bottom of the picture. I chose the elephant because it is the national animal of Thailand, and a prominent creature in African culture as well. Estimation: The painting is about 70% completed :-)

"Sexual Confidence" - 19 1/2" x 40"; Acrylic on Illustration Board

The beautiful, 1960's, Italian sex symbol, Sophia Loren, once said (and I'm paraphrasing here...) that half of sexiness is what you've got, and half what people THINK you've got. Here is my interpretation of a woman who society, at large, would not find sexy (because she doesn't have the "Size-0, No-Curves, Overtly-Ultra-Feminine" physique...) - but her confident pose says otherwise! It seems as if she's got BOTH halves, of "sexual interpretaion", covered quite nicely!
