Cut a spool of yarn into strips each about 30 inches in length. You can either do this yourself, or add this as a class filler for the groups to do. You must have mastered some control of your class for the latter.
Set up this activity with yourself modeling a conversation that has to do with yourself, and you must continue to talk while wrapping the yarn around your index finger. You have to talk, and wind your piece of yarn around your index finger all the way to the bottom. Experiment, or do the activity again about a favorite subject, or what your know. You can vary the time by changing the length of the yarn, or having the child wind, then unwind until the yarn is back off again. Go around the room and let all students have a turn.
This activity can be reintroduced later in the school year as a reading, book report, test review time, when you want a fun activity that provides focus, concentration on two things at the same time, and an attention grabbing review that will help keep their attention.
