Aids A modern Plague

Aids is caused by a virus called HIV,for human immunodeficiency virus. The virus attacks and eventually destroys a cell called the T-helper lymphocyte, which runs the immune system.Because the immune system is weakened,a person becomes more vulnerable to otherwise rare forms of pneumonia, cancer, and tumours. The presence of these secondary diseases is known as AIDS,and eventually they will cause Death.
this is a picture of the HIV Virus leaving an infected lymphocyte.

Symtoms: Some of the symtoms of AIDS are white spot on the tongue or mouth area;severe pain on swallowing; lumps on the neck or under the armpits and groin;persistent fever or night sweats;severe weight loss;swollen glands;extreme tiredness;persistent diarrhea. These are common symtoms in many other simple infections not related to AIDS. So,you should see your doctor if any of these symtoms persist for more than two weeks.

Treatment:At present there is no vaccine or cure for HIV infection or AIDS.However, there is a drug called Zidovudine(formerly AZT)which prolongs life in certain AIDS patients.Even though Researchers throughout the world are working to find a cure for AIDS,it is not hopeful that one will be found for a number of years.
