"derek and the window"
every afternoon, derek
looked forward to the
shy, smiling face in the
window--the drawn face,
the sad, lonely eyes--
he loved the way she
came alive when he
waved...the neighbors
told him her name was
mary, and that she
would spend days at
the window, watching
the people outside.
"what strong determination,"
derek thought--and for
days he could think
of nothing but her.
then one snowy tuesday
afternoon, there were
police where her face
should be--and
sleeping in the snow
was her frail body.
mary, mary--help her--
her body is cold as ice.
