#5. "Late Night Drive" (05.24.2003)
I watched the dawn rise
at eighty miles an hour
from the driver's seat of my car.
After eight hours alone
the world looks a little different.
A little sadder, a little lonelier.
Even so, driving out of the
darkness into the light
was like an epiphany.
I never knew my voice
was so strong, singing sad
songs in the dark,
where no one could see or hear.
I watched the dawn rise,
and smiled at my sadness.
