#186. "Don't I Know You?" (08.31.2006)
Hey --
Don't I know you?
Weren't you one of my
Fair-weather friends
From high school,
Who decided a strained civility
Was easier than the truth?
Oh, I'm sorry --
I must be mistaken.
But I must say,
The resemblance is quite uncanny.
It would be just like them
To blow me off,
Ignore me,
Forget my existence --
For no reason at all.
But of course
You wouldn't know anything about that,
Would you?
Maybe
I'll introduce you sometime --
I'm sure you'd hit it off.
Though you'll find out very quickly
That the taste
Of one's own medicine
Is the most bitter,
I'm sure you'll have a lovely time
Living your identical lies --
As long as you stay away from me.
Because I lived
On the sharp side of that lie
Not so long ago.
And so though I just met you,
I remember you all the same.
